Recommended Posts

Hello,

I need some more clients on my network so Im looking for a standard network switch. At least for (technically 3 since my router has to be connected to it). No wifi.

Cheapest and works good :) Id get a Linksys but ever since they were bought by another company I dont know if they are realiable.

Thank you.

I would personally recommend something in Netgear's ProSafe series, we use a lot of them in the schools and businesses we look after and they are alright pieces of kit whilst also being reasonably priced.

There are many around $50US.  Not sure how little you have to spend, but I would recommend Netgear as well on the low end.  Asus, D-Link, and TrendNet are all cheaper switches I've used and no problems with any of them.  I don't know where a good place to buy in Spain would be.  I buy all my stuff from Newegg.

Don't discount the deals you may find on eBay. A year or two ago I needed a new switch & on a whim checked eBay. I ended up finding a gently used D-Link DGS-1224T Rev. C 24-port smart switch (retailed for $250-300) for $60.

Some company was upgrading the switches on their network and didn't need it anymore. It arrived in perfect condition & I couldn't have found anything like it for the amount I paid if I bought new.

Yep, got a GS105 myself getting my laptop, desktop and home server connected to my router setup in the other half of my house.

Never had a problem with it, nice and quick for file transfers too :-)

Well like I mentioned I can get a NETGEAR ProSafe GS105 for 28 ? but the one you mentioned NETGEAR ProSafe GS108Tv2 is at 34 ?. It is not only a smart switch but (obviously) has more ports. I think for 6 more euros its worth it.

Opinions?

yeah I would go with the smart version for 6 quid ;)  Even if you don't have any plans on using features.. You can play with some stuff if you want..

Had 2 of those from Ebuyer, both started playing up after 6 months (which was a shame as they were fine when they worked).

I have 1xGS05 and 1xGS08 from Netgear now, would recommend either new or via ebay.

I have a Netgear GS605 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch which has been on pretty much 24/7 since around 2007 / 2008. I also own 3x Netgear GS608's, which is the same thing just with 8x ports.

Each of them connect to my router and go off to different rooms in the house, good reliable switches that are perfect for a home network.

I can obtain great transfer speeds through them too :)

Ive used the GS105 also and no issues to report. Seems like we will soon start needing 10Gbps switches though, I've run into the upper limit of 1Gbps a few times copying files from my NAS which can do 400MB/s READ speeds, writes are slower but still more than 1Gbps (150-200MB/s).

You shouldn't have any problems with that one if my experience has any value. :)

There is a v1 and v2 -- the v1 the one I have and older.  They changed up a lot with the v2, different body the web gui doesn't play nice with firefox for example on the v1 - have to use ie to access it and have everything look how its suppose too, etc.

Hello,

OK, what happened is that Google Shopping got confused. I put "gs108" and for some reason it shows me a GS208-100PES. Thats why where was such a small price difference.

Going with a GS105.

Hello,

If you have known me for years, you will know Im indecisive :p

I see they have a GS105E model as well. It costs two more euros and gives me a more control with VLANs, QOS, and some other stuff.

Should I go for it or is there other differences between the GS105E and GS105 that makes the GS105 more reliable?

I have it since quite a while, no problems whatsoever, just update the firmware of it and you re set.

My understanding is the E is a somewhat smart switch with no interface to manage it built in, need to use their tool to setup stuff.

You missed one feature it has that can come in real handy

Port mirroring

This allows you to sniff traffic if need be - for example you can mirror the port connected to your router - and via something connected to that mirror you can view all the traffic in and out of your network with a protocol analyzer - say wireshark, or use something like ntop to monitor and report on types of traffic flowing in and out of your network.

For the small difference in price - yes I would go with that E model, even if you don't have any current plans of using those features.  What about next week ;)
