Go back in time and try Windows 1.01 in your browser

Recommended Posts

You can now go back into the time of when Miami Vice was on and try the 28 years old Microsoft Windows 1.01 inside of your browser.

Quoted From Gizmodo.com

In these smartphone-studded days, it's easy to forget how computers worked. Once you had to run programs off of floppy disks and wait ages for everything to load. Luckily for your nostalgia, some bored developers are keeping the past alive with full-featured emulators that run in your browser.

The latest from emulator-builder supreme Jeff Par is the almost ancient Windows 1.01. This is the operating system that started it all, folks. Released in 1985 as one of the first operating systems with a graphical user interface (GUI), Windows 1.01 would become the foundation for the Microsoft empire that keeps the brand alive today. It was not, however, terribly sophisticated. With limited multitasking abilities and barebones graphics, the operating system amounted to an extension of MS-DOS. Windows 1.01 did come with some classic programs like Notepad, Paint and Writer?all of which you can tinker around with in the emulator.

The user friendliness of this is awful. No wonder older people have such an aversion to technology.

Actually, if you would replace every file name with a rectangle / square you would have windows 8.

That looks nothing like 8 lol..

Eh at least 8 runs everything.. with 1 and 2 it wasn't more than a gimmick as 99.9% of your software was console based still anyway and just worked a lot better, didn't even get passably useful till 3. When I first toyed with Win 1, I was of a mindset of "it's a fad, it'll never replace a DOS or Unix console." Didn't really stick for me till 95. That said, neat for a web app.

No, they're not the same.

The funny thing is that I actually manage to guess all the things I can do with that OS right away... while in Windows 8 I was more slow.

Microsoft definitely should make a Windows 1.01 modern app for Windows 8!

I see a menu-bar above the drives which doesn't look touch friendly. :p

To make it windows 8 u just gotta get rid of those, just pretend they aren't there!

Please don't turn this into another flaming Windows 8 thread. This is about Windows 1.01 being able to run in your browser :D

I believe that warwagon's screenshot was a joke, so you don't need to worry about a flame war. :)

These simple executables are the beginnings of what we know as the Windows today.
