PS4 vs Xbox One: Battlefield 4 Comparison

Curious to see what the same game looks like on two new, different systems? This video fromIGN should help.P[/size]
Note that these kind of videos are most useful if you run them at 1080p.

Before you go crazy, remember something else: this is one game, one developed by a third-party. So don't go jumping to too many conclusions!

PS: here's our review of the game.

UPDATE - Below is a video from DigitalFoundry that's probably more useful, since it's entirely side-by-side comparison footage.

This has pretty much caused the internet tubes to go crazy all today.

Definite slight edge in terms of visuals with the PS4. You really can't debate more dots on the screen. Although what is intriguing is the blurred look on the PS4 version due to applying FXAA and using a weaker scaler. Also the sharpness to the X1 version is quite weird.

In my opinion though, both versions look weak and rushed to the platform and compared to the PC it gets shot out of the water.

Another big point to make is that the X1 version of this isn't final and has many fixes to be included like ambient occlusion.

Hmm.. from what I see they looks pretty close.

There are areas where the Xbone is much brighter and sharped and smoother, and others the PS4 is brighter, sharper, and smoother.   I think the colors look nicer on the XBone but overall game visually go to the ps4.

xbox one looks much crispier and sharp overall.

still hard to tell which one is better, since this sharpness looks awesome in some scenes, and out of place in others.

What do you think?  Which one looks better (without fanboy answers,  just based on the videos above?)

I would love it someone released a video like this and did't say which side was which until a day later. That way you could get people's real opinions untainted by their console preference.

Xbox one definitely looks better.  Better textures and better contrasts... I can change the color temp on my tv to alter the colors but wouldn't help the poor textures on the ps4

My old eyes aren't seeing that much of a difference (especially on a lower res YT video), personally think the X1's looked a little sharper with slightly better color and texture detail.. but it's by a hair. I don't think I'd care either way if I got one or the other handed to me. Too damn close to whip myself up into a nerdrage about, pick the one that's got the games/features you want and go play.

Wait for final version, DICE themselves have said that X1 version is not final, including no AO which will be added.

Also, DF have admitted they screwed up their capture.

Ignoring the specific game I think it says good things about the PS4 hardware.  This game is a launch title and hasn't had the time to be finely tuned to the production hardware.  I suspect resolutions will go up from the 720p on the Xbone and the 900p on the PS4 in future games.  That bodes well to the PS4 actually hitting the target 1080p@60fps for this generation.  DigitalFoundry seems to think the lack of sharpness in the PS4 pics is a result of upscaling so if more finely tuned games in the future manage to hit 1080p natively then that becomes a non-issue because no upscaling will be necessary.  For the Xbone I'm sure it's resolution will go up as well as games are better tuned to it's hardware but I'm not as confident it will hit a full 1080p@60fps.  I think before DigitalFoundry was saying 900p was probably more realistic on the Xbone then upscaling to 1080p (thankfully it seems to have a better upscaler than the PS4).  I'm not trying to badmouth the Xbone, they do very well in other areas such as better audio and motion/voice controls but it seems clear that (at least in this case) the PS4 has the graphics lead.

Pretty close, as others have pointed out some differences.

I'm not sure which I prefer since the plusses and minuses to either seem to vary with the different scenes.  I guess I would say they both look fine.

Since neither console is pushing 1080p though, anyone aiming for highest fidelity will be on the pc.

For those that aren't interest in pc gaming, it looks like you can pick either and be happy.  Or, you can pick the ps4 version due to knowing that it is a bit higher in res.

I think that until MS or 3rd party developers prove it with actual software that runs at higher res, your assumption makes a lot of sense.

If we just take what we are seeing at the moment, it would lead me to think that the ps4 will always have an edge in that area.

Now since MS does at least have Forza running at 1080p/60, its clear that the X1 is capable of reaching that level.  I think the lingering question is can they do that for many games like the ps4, or will there be cuts that force lower res.

Same goes for the ps4 in a way.  We have not seen a 1080p/60 title yet (Is Killzone?) and we don't know how many games will be using that.

Killzone has been confirmed to run at 1080p@60fps.  That doesn't really matter though because it's not a cross platform title to compare image quality.  A PS3 can run games at 1080p@60fps is it's effects and such are turned way down, for example Ridge Racer 7 was true 1080p on the PS3.  There is no doubt the Xbone can hit 1080p@60Hz in general it's just that they'd have to sacrifice other things to get there and devs seem to rather keep everything ramped up and just drop the res a bit from the PS4.  Call of Duty: Ghosts is another cross platform title that has been confirmed at 1080p@60Hz on the PS4 but is supposedly upscaled on the Xbone (rumor has it it's all the way down at 720p but that's just rumor... if the PS4 can hit 1080p I suspect the Xbone can hit 900p but I guess time will tell)

Killzone is 60fps in MP, variable 30-45 in SP.   CoD is unconfirmed (I've heard 1080p, 900p, and 720p all for PS4).

We don't know yet what had to be compromised on to reach that 1080p60 on forza. And with how many other games(including other exclusives) aren't running at 1080p, and are running at resolutions below the ps4, it's pretty clear that they would have had to gimp something somewhere.

Yeah it seems weird to me that the ps4 can hit 1080p/60 in COD, but not in BF4?  That would seem to say that BF4 is the more demanding of the two games.

Maybe the dev teams had more time with the ps4 dev units and are therefore farther along in their optimization process. That could also explain why the reviews for the X1 version is delayed. DICE admitted that the build that people are testing was not as far a long for the X1 as it was for the ps4.  It was missing AO and some visual bug fixes.

Well even the ps4 is running games at sub 1080p levels in some games and yet no one thinks that Killzone is making sacrifices in order to reach that level. So why not the X1?  As far as other games, we aren't talking about that many, just a handful that we know for sure about.  I guess we also can't ignore the fact that these are all launch titles, so it wouldn't be the first time we saw inefficient use of hardware.

It could also have to do with different genres of games being easier to get up to that level.  Maybe the Forza devs are taking advantage of that fact.

The Playstation 4 definitely has the upper hand after taking a closer look. For the record I show no bias as I'm buying neither console.

Playstation 4:

Better antialiasing. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XqWRACk2zY#t=392

Natural contrast and colors.

Xbox One:

No hardware antialiasing by the looks of it. There may be FXAA, but it's hard to tell.

Too much contrast (details lost - see the people in this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XqWRACk2zY#t=344)

The following gifs support evidence found in the videos. The Playstation 4 has a far cleaner and more accurate picture.

If those are genuine then the PS4 has noticeably better graphics. The XBO version is definitely lacking with it comes to anti-aliasing.

So another case of systems being near equal on graphics capabilities unless you strain your eyesight or run some program to find differences. Guess it'll take a few years until people are over this and can put these minute differences aside.

Wow, not only is the xbox one missing clouds and even some texture layers on that arm in the first one, but holy crap is it way too dark.

Thought the Xbox One looked better, personally.

On second thoughts...

Really need to see the final bits (captured properly) to make the comparison worthwhile.
