PS4 vs Xbox One: Battlefield 4 Comparison

Recommended Posts

It's be funny if a couple days later they say "Oops, we switched the labels.  The Xbox video is actually Playstation and vice versa."  :D

Honestly they are both ugly and not even close to the demo at E3. The demo at E3 was >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> better than what we see in those videos. And it was expected since the demo at E3 was probably running on dual high end gpu. Anyone who say otherwise is blinded by fanboyism.

The AA (and/or upscaling) in the PS4 version is ugly. It's way too blurry. And even if it's way too blurry you can still spot jaggies here and there. The XBox version contrast is totally off. Black are way too black. Enough to actually lose details. Also there's far too much jaggies. Yes it looks great and better than PS4 when there's not too much things on the screen but as soon as there's lot of things to draw it becomes a jaggies fest and the PS4 then looks better albeit too blurry but i prefer too blurry over jaggies fest.

But those are things that might be corrected before the game ship or with an early patch. But right now it looks like the place to play BF4 will be on PC if you can afford a good enough one to play it.

How much do tvs have in play with this! Seen xbox one on ULED LG tv and it looked amazing,

That's a good point. Those games will be optimized to be shown on good HDTV not on some capture devices.

Anyway the quality of captures videos and screenshots has always been shady at best. Often it looks far better then the real deal. Often it actually looks worse than the real deal.

After viewing the footage I say the Xbox version is brighter, which makes it appear to look sharper. Just focusing on the sky in the gameplay, it looks more realistic on the Xbox One.

Xbox One appears to have more contrast, which can be both good and bad. I'm a bit conflicted on that, considering I like realism, but I don't find any sense in losing out on visuals just because it's "supposed" to be dark. If I wanted realism like that, I'd just play Doom 3 where you literally cannot see jack.

Anyway, the consoles are close enough that it's not going to matter until they mature later down the road and developers learn all the little tricks to get more out of these systems. Until then, pick whatever suits you.

For me, I just don't want to be stuck watching games from Naughty Dog go unplayed just because I didn't have the system. :p

Yeah same here.  If I don't have a ps4 at launch, I will probably hold out for their next big game and then pull the trigger.

For me what's surprising is the difference between the opinions on the video footage. A lot of people are preferring each other for various reasons and there's not too much of an overwhelming win for the PS4 even the resolution gain. I wonder if the resolution was something MS was keen to keep low to ensure better pixel quality?

I also thought the Xbox one looked better. I'm not an expert and I have no idea what "crushed" blacks are but the deeper blacks on the Xbox made it look better to me.  Also the scene where you can see the buildings in the background, the Xbox building looks a lot more detailed than the Playstation one.

So far I think the best videos out there are the ones JackFrag did or whatever the dudes name is.

Update:
Next-gen impressions video/Review

PS4:
Operation Locker
Paracel Storm
Dawnbraker
Flood Zone
Rogue Transmission
Siege of Shanghai
Lancang Dam
Zavod 331

XBO:
Fishing in Baku
Shanghai
South China Sea
Singapore
Kunlun Mountains
Tashgar
Suez

What is pretty interesting about the footage he has shared is it is all MP for the PS4, and all single player for the One.

When watching those videos, make sure to enable HD on YouTube as well.

I do think his impressions video sums it all up nicely though. Go where the games and your friends are if you have to make a choice.

Thing is, I do not have to make a choice, I already have both consoles preordered and paid in full, so I am going to be critical of either one no doubt. I am a consumer, and if I cannot express that disappointment when it is in fact there, then what can I do?

So I think this needs to be pointed out, as many people seemingly tend to prefer the vibrant and higher contrast of the One.

The PS4 and PC's visuals are more close together for a reason, as they are closer to how the visuals should actually be displayed, as the One apparently had some issues with Full & Limited RGB where the PC and PS4 did not. That is why the colors appear to be more vibrant and the blacks are crushed. So just keep that it mind, there is even talk that the One videos that were shown may not be representative of the actual retail copy.

Another very important thing to keep in mind is the less AA and more jaggies a game has, the better it could potentially look when "shrunk" to a smaller sized and is compressed. If a game is implementing AA it is trying to eliminate the jaggies, so you then shrink that image down, blurring will and does occur. If it is not eliminating the jaggies, and the image is shrunk down or compressed, a natural blurring happens due to the shrinking, but it is not as apparent or blurred as the image that was already eliminating the jaggies. Seems backwards yes, but that is how it does in fact work, as anyone who uses Photoshop on a frequent basis.

So keeping that all in mind, even though YES, the One footage looks pretty damn good still, I just personally do not think it can be so easily glossed over that the One is only still doing 720p even if the look may appear better to some. The simple fact is the fact it is only 720p means it had to be dialed back a fair amount in both resolution and the tricks it is implementing compared to the PS4 to achieve that comparable look.

8 years later on a new system and it is still only doing the resolution of the last system. That to me is definitely cause for a slight concern. And I know some point out AO will be patched in at release on the One, that may not necessarily be a good thing, as historically it does hit performance. We will have to wait and see.

It sounds to me like some of these arguments are that the PS4 is showing what it's supposed to be like even though the Xbox looks better.  That's like taking a picture and enhancing it with a filter so when someone looks at it they like it more than the original.  If the end is that it looks better, then why argue that it's not what the original is?

The Xbox One can easily do 1080p. It's just a matter of tuning the visuals. Comparing BF4 to any game on last-gen is a bit foolish, especially if you're only looking at the resolution.

By that definition, any 1080p-game for the PS3 is better looking than BF4 for PS4, since it's only running 900p.

So X1 looks better, but is still wrong.  You can preface your statements with whatever you want but your colors are showing.

The guy says he's got both consoles pre-ordered and paid in full, are you seriously saying that?

I have both consoles preordered also and I've recently been called out for being biased. The fact is I do have a preference because one console fits my needs better, IMHO.

I haven't seen all videos* but whatever I saw, PS4 had the worst texture quality when compared to PC/XBO. How can it be "closer to PC" if it has dialed back on texture resolution?

*I stopped watching more videos after DICE said that all versions are WIP with XBO considerably behind PS4 in terms of some unnamed effects. Who knows if they end up bumping both versions to 1080p by launch?

Is this sarcasm?  Answer is yes.  You aren't unbiased just because you're getting both consoles and you say you're unbiased.

You also don't need to jump down everyone who disagrees with yous' throat.   We get it, you think the XBone is the be all and end all.  As the videos have proven, and the developers have said there is a different between the two consoles.. but there is no clear A is better than B.

I should be able to dislike the Xbone as much as I want without being called out on it.

Being bias is not the same as having an opinion.

Umm, I think you mean that you should be able to have a different, reasonable, opinion without being attacked for it.

Being able to dislike something as much as you want would include the people that wish to troll and unfairly attack people or products. Unfortunately, there are people here that do that on both sides, just like the internet as a whole.

People should be allowed to prefer the X1 or the PS4 and also be allowed to criticize either one without silly attacks as long as they are being reasonable in the process.

Yeah it seems weird to me that the ps4 can hit 1080p/60 in COD, but not in BF4?  That would seem to say that BF4 is the more demanding of the two games.

Maybe the dev teams had more time with the ps4 dev units and are therefore farther along in their optimization process. That could also explain why the reviews for the X1 version is delayed. DICE admitted that the build that people are testing was not as far a long for the X1 as it was for the ps4.  It was missing AO and some visual bug fixes.

Just wanted to chime in and say that Infinity Ward has now confirmed that the Xbox One version of COD Ghosts is in fact 720p upscaled to 1080p with the PS4 version is running 1080p native, both 60fps.
