EA Cancels Command & Conquer

Recommended Posts

Those that made Total Annihilation also worked on SupCom. (edit: and last I heard, were working on a new RTS again, if it wasn't canceled yet in the GPG buyout :()

And there is no other RTS better then SupCom since the times of RA2 and WC3.

Some might not have enjoyed the futuristic side of it, but the as you mention, the massive scale of thousands of units moving across the map....the strategic mind was well satisfied. Oh and the dual monitor addition.... priceless, a welcome addition to the genre, having a whole monitor to act as your map <3

I know CT of GPG made TA.

I'm not entirely sure who's working at the company making this

http://store.steampowered.com/app/233250/

which is a bigger even more all encompassing version of TA/SupCom. even ripping the nano spray construction directly from TA.

I'm not a fan of the stylized small planets though... :/

Or you could accept that C&C was one of the first in the RTS genre to offer a compelling single player storyline backed up by a lot of FMVs to engage the player.

Any C&C fan would remember seeing Kane come in about mission 3/4 and shoot Seth.  Or taking the ion cannon to landmarks at the end etc (yeah I like the baddies :p)

If you had a great time with it as multiplayer, cool beans bro but C&C set the standard for a great single player RTS experience that had a bumpy ride ever since WWS was canned but hit rock bottom in C&C4 with poor storytelling combined with throwing out one of the fundamental mechanics of the series and replacing it with a subpar change for the sake of change approach.

To some extent I would have rather had seen a buggy ass Generals 2 than none at all.  There is a severe dearth of RTS games at the moment.  Its interesting how the games industry goes through phases.  In any case we are a long way away from the late 90's - early 2000s where you actively had C&C, Red Alert, StarCraft, Dune2000/emperor, Dark Reign, TA etc

ummm, C&C was one of the first RTS games period. what was before it was Dune. those two pretty much defined the RTS category.

and while C&C had a good story, that was par for the course back then. Multiplayer wasn't a thing yet back then, yet C&C added some awesome multiplayer to the game.

The thing with C&C is that it's story and FMV's set a precedent not for the relatively new and undefined RTS genre, but for computer gaming as a whole. before this, stories in games where scrolling text with, if you where lucky, some pixelated art inbetween.

But that doesn't mean you can claim that one of the first, if not the first, RTS game to have multiplayer didn't have multiplayer.

Also there's no real lack of RTS games, there's a lot of them, theres even some very good ones, they're just very niche and not widely known or publicized, a lot more than back in the glory days you describe, and with a lot more variety to.

We have the regulars C&C And Starcraft, SupCom is still alive, Dawn of War still lives in several incarnations, that WWII small unit RTS just released it's second game or is releasing it's second game ? Planetary Annihilation is in early access.

Then you have the more niche games, like Wargame, which is massive and set in the modern world. seems interesting but I have enough games to play right now, and I don't really have time to dedicate the time to a game like a RTS game needs.

Dude I think you just like debating for the sake of it, I gave up when you said theres no real lack of RTS games.

You enjoy your revisionist history of the past and present state of the genre im going to sleep comfortably knowing the C&C story was awesome and what I will remember it for, CNC4 was a disgrace in both gameplay and story, EA has been bad for this franchise,

Yeah that's the game I meant, same guys :) Even the engine for it derives from the SupCom engine if im not mistaken.

RA2/Yuris revenge was my favourite out of the whole series, still enjoy playing it 10 years on, the in game videos were kl and the game wasnt over in 5minutes like some are these days

RA3 just never lived upto it in my eyes, C&C3 was pretty good but the series went downhill after that

I remember playing original red alert with my brother, good memories, just a shame the series is pretty much over now :(

it's pretty well agreed now that EA is the cancer of the video game development world, business model before great gaming for them. :/

No they initially announced they dropped single player. then they later announced it would have a full single player campaign as well.

I never knew they brought it back, still it was hard to follow what the hell was going on anyway.

C&C traditionally single player ?

seriously ? it was the games we went to friends houses with our big 90's desktops and laplink and eventually coax network cable to play.

I miss the original C&C multiplayer, RTS game with Capture the flag multiplayer, it had multiplayer modes NO modern RTS has, and hasn't had for ages. Rushing a base with a jeep an stealing the flag was awesome when he was preparing a major assault :)

and the game was still Generals 2, it wasn't in the name, but it certainly wasn't regular C&C, it still had the ****ty Generals, concept, the ****ty generals, design, the ****ty Generals style. and the "not multiplayer" lasted for a day or so at most, before they announced it was a faulty announcement or misinterpretation along with the F2P announcement. hardly something to get confused over.

Perhaps for you C&C was never about single player, but for many of us (myself included) it was all about single player. We all played the multi player too of course but our main attraction was always the single player campaign. People seem to forget Sole Survivor which was a failed attempt to create a multi player only C&C, fact is it failed because it wasn't what fans wanted.

Totally agree that Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge was a laugh.  The plot was great, campy and a fun game.  I remember being in the IRC chat room for the Yuri Q&A, silly harmless fun :)  Shame the series is canned but a good move based on alpha feedback.  Hate pay to win games.

What revisionist history ?

care to point but specific points of my posts that was wrong ? and I specifically said C&C had an awesome story, not just for an RTS but for gaming in general. The one who seems to be arguing for the sake of arguing here appear to be you, as you haven't provided a counter to any of my points. I even gave you a small sample lists of the RTS games available now. a lists that's just as big or bigger than your list, a list which kind of included doubles.

Ah ok, gotcha (Y). Yeah, C&C has had a multi player component since the beginning. However, I never really played it personally till RA1 when they introduced "Skirmish mode".

C&C4 didn't fail because it had too much depth, it failed because it threw out all the traditional gameplay mechanics that defined the franchise - resource collection, base-building, large armies, etc. That's not a problem if it's a compelling new direction for the franchise but it just wasn't that. Too much focus was placed on multiplayer and the singleplayer was short and rushed. This review highlights a lot of that. It also had weak graphics, poor animations (units would often overlap) and went backwards in terms of the cinematics. It wasn't what fans wanted, as evidenced by the brutal user score on Metacritic.

C&C has traditionally always been a singleplayer game, which makes it all the more bizarre to focus on multiplayer. That's especially true when it moves into unfamiliar territory with regards to setting. There's little point using the C&C name if you're not going to use anything recognisable from the franchise. Adding singleplayer after the launch all but guarantees it won't be anywhere close to the quality of a traditional singleplayer game.

By that I mean it started out as Generals 2 and then they flip-flopped, same with the commitment to singleplayer. Fans just couldn't keep up with it. Further, to make it F2P again flies in the face of franchise tradition. There just wasn't anything for fans to get excited about and I say that as somebody that supported the franchise from the original game. Age Of Empires faced a similar thing with the decision to go F2P, which fundamentally altered the gameplay that everybody knew and loved.

I didn't suggest that but take a look at the guy in charge of Victory Games - he's a nobody. He has no experience with the genre and ran his previous company 3DO into bankruptcy. Victory Games just wasn't a credible developer to have in charge of the franchise and I'm not surprised that EA decided to shutter it altogether.

Only C&C 3 had large armies - the issue THERE were that the armies could get so large they overwhelmed the maps.  (No version of Generals had large maps, and the same applies to the mods based on it or Zero Hour, especially those that came post Kane Edition or Kane's Wrath - precisely because there was an upper limit to army size compared to map size.)

If you wanted REALLY large armies, not even C&C was the way to go - the real "large army" RTS was TA/SupCom, and especially SupCom - and it still is.  Supreme Commander STILL scales up like only Sins of a Solar Empire in terms of RTS titles, and, unlike Sins, is entirely ground-based.  Further, Supreme Commander (with or without Forged Alliance, in fact) is perfectly playable on modern OSes and modern hardware.  Don't take my word for it - try it yourself.

MMORTS can work - however, it works best when thought of as free-to-play from the beginning due to it being the closest thing to a traditional RTS.  (For some reason, RTS players really really resent being thought of as cash cows.)

That and Warcraft, which was one of my all-time favourite games. I found Warcraft II and III to be very disappointing in comparison to the original.

Well, Megarace also relied heavily on FMV and that was released a couple of years earlier.

Also there's no real lack of RTS games, there's a lot of them, theres even some very good ones, they're just very niche and not widely known or publicized, a lot more than back in the glory days you describe, and with a lot more variety to.

The RTS genre is nowhere near as active or high profile as it used to be. Dawn Of War 2 was great but it's not a traditional RTS and there is no sequel currently in the works; Company Of Heroes 2 is similar - they're more RTT than RTS. The Total War series is a bit too specialised for casual play. Starcraft II is probably the best traditional RTS about but the setting won't appeal to everyone.

To be honest I've mostly moved away from the RTS genre, preferring instead games like Civilization 5, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Dota 2 and Tropico 4.

I was speaking in relative terms, as C&C4 was widely criticised for its low unit cap.

Now that you mention it, iirc in C&C original readme file, it boasted that you can have as many units as the memory/RAM allow,

which it said an 'improvement' over Dune 2 unit cap.

As C&C4 back to unit cap, isn't that ... backward?

  • 1 month later...

So this new C&C browser based game with a new subtitle that I got a mail about the other day with a code for a booster pack.

I'm assuming this is a new alpha release of this same game ?

But only pirates use LAN play these days!! /s

Wouldn't it be awesome if Microsoft were secretly working on a new Rise of Nations game.
