Titanfall will be PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One exclusive for 'life of the title' (update: studio head speaks out)

Titanfall, one of Microsoft's big reveals at its E3 presser, will remain "exclusive for the life of the title" to the PC and Xbox platforms, publisher Electronic Arts' CFO Blake Jorgensen said during a financial call today. This comes just a week afterdeveloper Respawn Entertainment revealed the game's March 2014 release date and hefty $250 collector's edition. If this is a make-or-break for you on choosing which next-gen console to buy first, there still might be an Xbox One pre-order hiding out somewhere.

Update: Respawn studio head Vince Zampella took to Twitter stating thatTitanfall had always been planned as a Microsoft exclusive at launch, but that "EA made the deal for the rest, we only found out recently." This makes it sound as if the team had plans to bring the title to other platforms in the future, but the business end put the kibosh on the notion.

Not sure what he's upset about. This is to be expected when you partner with EA. From a business standpoint, I cannot argue the move. However, for a gamer, that's rather lame.

Thankfully, I'm not too concerned about it considering my preferred FPS platform is PC anyway.

Glad I'm getting an Xbox One. Game looks amazing. I'm also getting a PS4, but that's why I wasn't going to bet on PS4 getting the game when it was never stated it would be a timed exclusive. It will probably have the same effect as Mass Effect. That helps out MS and they are banking on that.

Sony fanboy meltdown over at reddit and neogaf is hilarious.

Good move by MS if the game is really as good as it looks.

I don't quite understand what the fuss really is about, since I bet most of those dedicated trolls gamers at GAF have a PC anyway, where they'll be able to experience power far in excess of the 'terrible' consoles...

Well Sony and MS are clearly going to try and buy up all the exclusive content they can. Sony buys up exclusive content for both AC4 and Watch Dogs, etc.

MS sees Titanfall as a potential winner and they want to see it be a flagship title for their systems.  They are happy to see it go to the pc as well I bet. It doesn't really hurt the X1 since most people that are pc gamers are unlikely to be swayed to buy a console based on one title, plus it gives them a chance to improve the pc gaming scene that they have had issues with.

Titanfall could be the first title to really show off the new Xbox Live system on the pc.  With GFWL out of the way, MS can show an improved system in XBL.

Add that to the list the almighty gaming prophet CBOAT has got wrong.

Was funny how on N4G and NeoGAF everyone pretty much affirmed that this was coming to PS4 after 6 months.

Really don't see what the fuss is about. From the gameplay videos I've seen it just looks like any other FPS, except with mechs instead of tanks. :/

Maybe I've missed what the awesome feature of this game is, but right now the Xbox One is welcome to it as far as I'm concerned.

Sony has paid for exclusive Destiny content too.

to be honest Titanfall looks like a shallow generic FPS, they can keep it exclusive if they want too.... /s

I'm betting MS probably has data showing that paying devs just for extra content doesn't increase sales significantly like paying for a complete exlcusive likely would.  That's all I can think every time I see the AC4 commercial and they advertise a whopping 1 hour of extra content.  I doubt anyone will really miss that on X1.

That's exactly why people are excited.  Its like COD with mechs.  It is the old COD dev team after all, so of course it will retain things that remind us of COD.

I think it draws excitement because it takes an fps formulae that works and puts a spin on it, adding in the whole mech mechanic.  There are a lot of mech fans out there, so to see that fleshed out in a AAA fps is nice.

I'm not sure why people would be so down on it though.  This genre is pretty darn popular.

Microsoft should consider getting Titanfall into the NEW Windows Market Place.  Right now it's cluttered with casual pick up and play games (in which a lot of them suck).

It would definitely get attention.  Especially if Titanfall can't be purchased on Steam or Origin.

From all the videos I've seen, TF is CoD on CRACK, running from the cops..  I haven't liked CoD since MW2 (though MW1 being my Fave)

I watched clips where players jumped through a good size chunk of space without ever touching the ground.  To me that adds more depth.

And the Mechs aren't your typical slow Mechs either.

The game is published by EA. MS would need to pay a very very very big truckload of money for it to not be avalaible on Origin. Ms probably already paid a truckload for it to be console exclusive. I don't even want to think how much it would cost to prevent EA from selling their own published game on their own Origin store.

Firstly I doubt Sony are stupid enough to miss a trend like that if MS can spot it. Secondly, if it was the case they wouldn't push for a timed exclusive if they didn't believe in wholly exclusive content full stop.

Timed exclusives are way different than having an extra hour of content that a competitor might not.

You need to consider the price asked for a full exclusivity too when the game is published by the like of Activision, Ubisoft or EA. It's surely not cheap. I don't see why a big publisher would want to help companies like Microsoft or Sony for free. Microsoft has a lot of money to burn. Sony? Not sure they can burn as much.

I think I completely miss-read what i was responding too, i thought they were saying that MS had come up with some information that said paying for a full exclusive was pointless. So i was trying to point out that if that was the case, they wouldn't pay for timed exclusive. Completely agree with what you are all saying, i just need to learn to read!

Early on MS said they're going to be spending quite a lot on games, that could mean anything from opening new studios (which they are) for more first party exclusives, or paying for exclusivity from 3rd parties.   This is nothing new, Sony does this and has in the past.  The difference here though, and lets be honest, if MS really goes aggressive at buying exclusive games it can out bid Sony on them.     Now we just have to wait and see how far they push on with this going forward.  If the competition is high, and with the price difference to start, I could see them pushing very hard for as much content as they can get to sell units.

They did the same to start with the 360, at least for the first 2 to 3 years and then scaled back on it.  I don't see the same being the case this time around, they'll spend money to make it back later.      At this point I think they should make a deal with Remedy and make them a official first party developer and let them go wild, also give me Alan Wake 2 plz.    They've grabbed up a few studios the past 2 years and I think they could grab even more.
