Steven P. Administrators Posted October 31, 2013 Administrators Share Posted October 31, 2013 Go here for the news on the apps: https://www.neowin.net/news/official-neowin-apps-now-available-for-windows-phone-and-windows-81 There are currently no plans to add comments or comment adding to the apps, (why?) instead we want an easy way for people to navigate to the www version to read/add comments. There are currently no plans to add forums either, the mobile version of Neowin forums serves this purpose already. Windows 8/8.1 store link: http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/app/neowin/6023e089-0237-4ec3-9fe1-5c23469b9fe6 Windows Phone store link: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/neowin/1e9ea552-58c1-4705-aecc-5fa892b58807 Version 1.1 - (tba) Version 1.0 (29 October) - initial version - latest feed fixed Planned fixes/additions Links to the actual article on the www at Neowin (Windows Phone and Windows) this could be that the headline is linked or with a view online link under the story view. The aspect ratio of the thumbnails in the story index makes some images look squashed (from left to right) on Windows Phone Being able to share the articles (facebook/twitter/email at the very least) on Windows Phone and Windows Some kind of number on the tile to show how many new stories there are (Windows Phone and Windows) Follow Neowin on Facebook and Twitter links/graphics (Windows Phone and Windows) Change the author line to remove the email address and just have the name of the author on the same line as the publish time (eg: 1 hour ago by John Callaham) done via RSS Change publisher name to Neowin LLC (it's now "neowin") Live title when it is at it's largest could use the inline article image like the official Facebook tlie does In Settings > About, add Report bugs that links to here https://www.neowin.net/forum/forum/19-site-forum-issues

Steven P. Administrators Posted October 31, 2013 Author Administrators Share Posted October 31, 2013 Microsoft :) edit: Meaning, being able to add comments might make the app unsuitable for minors, they also don't allow external links to other sites, which is why nothing is linked in the story view, I hope to be able to fix this by allowing readers to load our own www version of the article. They have been very helpful, but there are also restrictions on what we can allow for the app.

Steven P. Administrators Posted October 31, 2013 Author Administrators Share Posted October 31, 2013 How come no app for Android? Because we don't have a dev that builds Android apps for Neowin.

You can't just upload an app made for Windows in the Google Play store :s Shaun N. 1 Share
The Evil Overlord
Are you serious? You can't just upload an app made for Windows in the Google Play store :s I am, I never realised the code would be so different, I assumed there'd be one or 2 tweaks for optimisation to other os's, but mostly it would be similar to installing software on a pc (ok naivety on my part) And I assumed the installer is handled by the OS instead of a standalone installer

I have the WPCentral app and they list external links that you can click on and then they open in IE. They also link directly to apps in the store if that's part of the article post. It's a pretty full featured app with commenting and forum support and all that. bhast2 1 Share
bhast2
The code is very different between android, ios, and, windows. They all use different languages to make the apps work The Evil Overlord 1 Share

George P Global Moderator Posted October 31, 2013 Global Moderator Share Posted October 31, 2013 Microsoft probably didn't build it then. Well, no, but even if they did why wouldn't they add those options? I find it kinda odd, oh well.
Steven P. Administrators Posted October 31, 2013 Author Administrators Share Posted October 31, 2013 Well, no, but even if they did why wouldn't they add those options? I find it kinda odd, oh well. They said in the emails that they purposely don't allow external linking to other sites from the app, that's why all inline links are stripped from the story view. They all use different languages to make the apps work Ahh, thank you, I was being na?ve, I honestly thought it would be one or two steps apart from installing on a regular pc or using something like installshield or some other .exe set up program. I still have a lot to learn, actually, while I do still have this post open, is installation on win 8 or 8.1 different to the more 'traditional' (for lack or a better word) methods used in the older versions of windows? I get that, but I'm just wondering why? I suppose they don't want users to be tossed out of the app and into the browser in the end. Still, you could have the option to show them in the end as an option that then people can click on. Anyways, just odd to me. I've been using the mobile site because I'd like to be able to comment and check the forums as well. Steven P. 1 Share

Steven P. Administrators Posted October 31, 2013 Author Administrators Share Posted October 31, 2013 Microsoft have their own guidelines for building apps, and what they can and can't do.. there's no blame here imo.

I'm asking to learn, it was the first thing to pop up in my head from remembering to install programs :) the exe thing was because I know windows uses that, (although I don't know anything about 8 or newer)
