Another Suggestion

Recommended Posts

I know my previous suggestion was shot down due to its numerous flaws, but I was thinking it would be nice for original posters that make software or apps to have the ability to edit their first posts because if they make changes people usually have to search through the posts just to get the latest version of the software or app. It can even be section specific so that it wouldn?t be abused. Plus it also means people won?t report bugs that have already been fixed. :)

I still don't understand what is wrong with my reasoning here. The way it is set up right now is perfectly fine. :/

Can members go to that link? Seeing as it's BSP link?

And I think it's a good idea also, but like many perks and benefits, it only takes one idiot to ruin it for everyone else :(

Ha ha, whoops! Completely missed that. Here is the post:

For me it would make more sense to make an update post at the end of the thread, then PM a Mod to modify the original post so that it links to the update posts throughout the thread. That way someone new to the thread will have all the information linked from the first post, and anyone that has been following the thread from the beginning will receive a notification of a new update to the thread.

But if you PM a mod then it could take several hours for it to be edited because sometimes the online list shows them as online even when they aren't.

I don't see how that would be a problem? The update on the initial post would only be seen by new readers, not people that had been following the thread from the start. And new readers will probably take the time to skim through the thread to see other user's comments.

Also, what you are suggesting would break the idea of following the topic, wouldn't it? If the original post gets edited the people that are following the thread won't get notified if I'm right.

which is why i say it would be something you'd have to sign up for (possibly posting a link to your project as well) and be granted permission to do. and it would only have effect in the Software Discussion & Support Forum & only in Threads that you started

i can't think of too many ways to abuse that & if someone does it wouldn't be too hard to take care of that person

Say you found a software from the software forum that you want and the topic has tons of pages, then you probably won't read all the pages. (e.g. Speckie has 20 pages). So chances are, you download it from the first page which probably contains an older version because the first post hasn't been updated yet as the moderator is not online.

The OP could easily post "See first post for details on the update." meaning the follow system is still in use.

I agree since people would have to sign up for it, I doubt they would abuse it. :)

Come on! Please consider it as it would be useful and means less work on the OP and staff.

Its not allot of work to answer a pm from a member and use the edit button....

I really can't see any reason that it would need such swift attention. If, for whatever reason, the user thinks it does, report the post and it will get changed more quickly. Most mods have email notifications set-up to where they're notified almost instantly of new emails.

Personally, I'm notified via mobile as well, I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Even if its not a lot of work for staff consider the points from my previous post as I believe this feature would be beneficial.

It may not need immediate attention, but its better to get things done quicker and with less hassle.

And what if the member has their PMs disabled?

You're grasping at straws, now. As far as I know the user cannot disable their PMs, and even if they could that would be their issue, wouldn't it? If they want to edit something, they should contact a member of staff.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I appreciate the suggestions that members make. But we need to see how much of a benefit something could be, as well as how abused it can be, and in this situation we already have a plan in place for if such an issue arises.

Yes you can:

So someone disables their messenger because they don't want to contact people or be contacted, then they are annoyed when they can't contact a member of staff? I see a button there that allows them to enable the messenger again. It is a situation that they put themselves in to, I'm not sure why we should put in a workaround for them when they have the ability to solve the issue themselves. :/

I doubt the OP will re-enable it just so they PM a mod to edit a topic as they disabled for a reason. Also this was merely a suggestion so there's no pressure to add it, but it would be nice to have.

Ok so, enable PM's long enough to message a Moderator....done and done.

It isn't that simple for some members, unfortunately.

It is that simple. If they don't want to take the time to correct something that they have disabled, I don't see why we should put a workaround in place for them.

Anyway, we've had several staff members echo the same sentiments, as well as the higher-ups. This isn't happening.
