Shots fired at LAX, airport shut down

Those different colored bullets, doesn't that indicate tracers or something?

Yes and each one would be a felony in CA, Just goes to show how far the media goes to push the fear factor up.

Now Fox is claiming it was an AK47..

great.. the mythbusters were there!.....

STATEMENT FROM SCIENCE CHANNEL:

MythBusters' Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci were present in Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport at the time of today's shooting incident. Both were en route to Delaware for the filming of 'Punkin Chunkin'. Grant and Tory are safe and being rerouted.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by today's tragedy and our gratitude goes out to the members of the LAPD, Airport Police, TSA, andVirgin America staff for restoring safety to the scene.

My question is how the hell did the gunman get a gun into an airport and managed to get so far and then shoot his gun?

To have man walk into LAX with a rifle, continue to walk with it, and shoot people is a total failure of security!

I can't comment on LAX but here in Atlanta it was not illegal up until a few months ago for a person to walk into the airport with a legally owned weapon whether it was a assault rifle or handgun throughout the entire public area.  Public area is any area outside of the section screened and secured by TSA.

Thankfully I believe they changed that but this leads incident highlights a lot of other problems with airport security.  There are air marshals in the airports but nowhere near enough for them to prevent something like this because well they are AIR marshals.  When the TSA was formed originally they wanted to start their own armed police force but the police unions around the country did not want to give up their airports so TSA lost that battle and that's why you see every local government that owns that airport has their own police force staffing it.

That said if you've ever seen airport police you'll know they aren't exactly a crack police force ready to respond to any threat.  Hell half the time if you pay attention you can catch them play games on their computers while they "oversee" the security checkpoints.  It is a failure of security yes but unfortunately it was only a matter of time until it happened.  People don't want to give more power to the TSA to secure the airports because OMG our freedoms and yet they really don't want to pay more taxes locally to have an armed swat team constantly patrol the public area so things like this happen.

Airports have relatively minimal security, don't they? I've never been in one (in America) that I thought was more secure than say, a city street or a mall.

There's pretty much no security until you get up to the baggage check line.

No, in the first press conference both a FBI agent and a police officer stated their name first then state a bunch of letters afterwards. Im not sure if it is initials or some kind of auth code or what....

May have been spelling out their last names, or rank.

Just figured out how he got it in there.  He actually pulled it out "before" he got to the security checkpoint, he just ended up past the security checkpoint as he hunted for TSA officers.  You can skip to about 0:30 to see how he concealed it.

I was wondering the same thing, how in the world he got a rifle into the airport without somebody noticing.  I used to travel with my handgun all the time, just unload it, put it in a locked hard case, put that case in your checked baggage where it's not accessible during the flight, and one time I had an Australian TSA guy ask to look at it to make sure it was unloaded and that the ammunition was properly stored.  After all the ###### that's been going on in recent years, I'd be afraid to touch a gun for a day or two before getting on a plane, they'd wipe that little sheet across my hands and it would detect gun oil and they'd lock me in a room for a week.  Guess I'll be driving a lot more.
