g2 vs nexus5

Recommended Posts

which phone would you buy?

assuming the price difference is around 100 (g2 is more expensive)

well i know in terms of specs, g2 has a slightly higher spec, but i hate the fact that majority of the vendors release their phones every 6 months (including LG) that g2 will be the same, but i like the UI both SW and HW

i'm talking about this when i have to sell the phone in the future (the price tremendously lowers down) while nexus releases every year

but i kind of dislike the fact how nexus has an internal battery, but support how you can upgrade asap and simplified

nexus5 is supposed to come tomorrow, and if i send it back, i will get a refund

anyways, whats your personal opinion what would you buy?

my purpose is calling/txt msg/sns msging/checking emails not much of multimedia or facebooking lol

dont use the phone much, but if i pick out what i use the most would be msging and making calls :)

I would personally go for the Nexus, I've owned a few Samsung phones and got sick of waiting for updates or phones not getting updates even though they were less than a year old. You'll get updates within weeks with the Nexus and you'll continue to get them for almost two years. Vanilla android too of course.

I think you gotta play with them both to decide. There's no better option for your case since nothing you do requires anything special.

If you are fine with stale versions of Android then only go for G2. The G2 will probably not get Android 5.0. It might even stay on 4.4 forever, while Nexus 5 will surely get 5.

I'd get the Nexus 5, but I like having the plethora of custom roms built from source with updated binaries available to choose from. Unfortunately for me, Verizon sucks and refuses to allow Google the freedom to update the phones without going through them first so they don't come to Verizon anymore. I'm actually going to be getting an LG G2 probably in the next couple days. I'll get by without the day 1 Android updates thanks to CyanogenMod officially supporting the phone. No more LG UI to deal with and moderately quick updates.

Me, Nexus 5 baby! I have a Nexus 4 and already jumping over the Nexus 5. :)

The LG seems too big to me. Doesn't seem like much but it just does to me.

Everyone that checked out the phone (LG) said it was a good hardware device but the software ruins it. So since i'm more of a AOSP guy anyways i'd still get the Nexus unless of-course I needed Verizon's coverage but I do my best to avoid anything not GSM :P.

Nexus 5 without question. That goes for most phone comparisons that involve the N5 too.

thx for the reply.

may i know why you would go w n5 specifically?

The 2 main points would be

-Half the price of any comparable specification phone on the market today, you just can't beat it for the price, it's impossible.

-Latest stock Android version and will be updated better than any other OEM on the market today guaranteeing updates to the phone, while others stop support 6-9 months later.

Nexus 5; the fact that updates are released by Google and not the by LG makes this phone much better. Also price and vanilla Android.

This is the main reason I would go with the Nexus 5. Updates are a huge deal.

If you are not concerned about signing a contract or a person who roots  your phone, I would  recommend the G2.  Has a better camera and better battery life.  When the G2 gets KitKat, then its going to be almost the same phone.  Of course if you root, then you can install the latest OS anytime.  (No KK yet)

So again, if you dont want to root are are worried about hte price and OTA updates, go with the N5.  Otherwise, the G2 is a solid phone.

Nexus 5. I prefer vanilla Android over whatever LG, Samsung, HTC et al. use to 'improve' the experience.

I'd go with the Nexus 5, obviously. There is the obvious price difference (off contract), and I think that more than covers the camera and battery. The camera seems decent so far, but I haven't really tested it much. I'm impressed with the low light shots from my couch in HDR+ though. And the battery isn't really a big deal to me because work or home, I always have a charger nearby. If I don't, I have a nice external battery I can charge it with.

And then there's the fact that it's a Nexus and I'd take the latest version of Android over a slightly better but still a camera phone camera and a bigger battery.

Edit: I know it's not a very good test, but I got this phone with around 70 something, maybe 80% battery and now I'm down to 39% after 7.5 hours and over 2.5 hours of screen on time. Seems not too bad so far. We'll see tomorrow.

G2 v N5

G2 - has slightly larger screen, less PPI screen, lower resolution, less megahertz cpu, more gigapixel, more battery mah, Infrared Emitter, less attractive pricing

N5 - has slightly smaller screen, more PPI screen, higher resolution, more megahertz cpu, less gigapixel, less battery mah, no Infrared, more attractive pricing

One thing cannot be quantified, is the different kind of experience: G2 has it's own UI, and the N5 delivers what is considered a vanilla UI. Can we not root the G2 and adapt a UI more to our liking, then the difference is moot.

After taxes+shipping, the price difference is nearly negligible. over $450 for the N5 (32b), found competitive prices in online classifieds.

Just a small correction.

They are the same resolution overall.

Well I did end up getting the G2 on Sunday after all. I immediately rooted it, installed TWRP, and installed CyanogenMod. Running like a champ now with stock Android. I will miss having day one updates, but it's worth having an awesome phone with awesome coverage.

What I did as well.  Got mine Saturday and rooted right away.  Had an issue with GPS tho after I applied CM 10.2 M1.  But this was ROM related and not phone related.  I would make sure you test your GPS.  Any issues, let me know.  :)

I did, but it seemed to go away after a reboot. What did you do to fix it?

Spec wise the only difference is Nexus 5 has like a 2" smaller screen and is clocked about 2300 instead of 2260.  So to me its between "I want faster updates" or "I really use my camera a lot on my phone" as the G2 has a much better camera. Both are manufactured by LG as well and it was announced it would be getting 4.4 in November but no telling when Verizon will let it through.

Initial problem was I didnt even see any Satillites at all.  So could not use GPS.  Read/looked around and posted the problem.  Apparently it is an issue with CM10.2.  You have to get a GPS lock on 4.2.2 (close to or original stocl ROM) first BEFORE you apply CM 10.2.  So I wiped my phone, appled a near stock 4.2.2 ROM, made sure I had a GPS lock on several sats using GPS Test, then booted to recovery, did a system wipe, and applied CM.  Afterwards, GPS locks quick and no issues.

Sweet phone and fast . I like the edges of hte glass and how they are curved as well.  Makes the device feel better while swiping your fingers a crossed.

Pretty much.  Not many differences between the G2 and N5.  Not worried about Verizon getting 4.4 for hte G2 as I root and will have it anyway.  On 4.3.1 on the G2 now.
