After annually ruling the Halloween weekend for years, the "Saw" franchise began to die off as audiences grew tired of the torture porn genre, favouring instead the micro-budget thrills of the "Paranormal Activity" franchise.

Now, after a three year break, Lionsgate has begun actively developing an eighth film in the franchise.

The studio is reportedly seeking a new direction for the franchise, but aren't rushing to meet a date - instead, they're waiting until they have "the perfect take to move forward".

The studio was originally considering a remake/reboot, but instead have opted for a sequel that will potentially take the franchise in a new direction.

As much as I'm against them continuing the franchise, I must admit, I was kind of missing it this Halloween. For me, it was a staple, no matter how bad they were getting, I always loved the annual tradition of going to the theater, to the midnight showing with the uberfans.

I don't have many movie franchises that I actually enjoy, like everyone else has the Marvel crap or the Batman/Superman/etc crap, that comes out almost annually, so for me, Saw was the one time a year I thoroughly enjoyed going to the theater, knowing that, even if it is garbage, I'm still going to enjoy it.

This year, even though it has been 3 years since Saw 3D, was the first year I was truly missing the annual tradition.

Early review: More of the same, just worse than before.

I really enjoyed the whole series.  It started to get a little stale after the 3rd, but they made up for it with a solid story line.

I felt a bit lost not having a Halloween scare/thrill this year.

As dumb as it is, I think they should drop the "Saw" name.  Sadly, too many people automatically discredit a movie once it's gotten beyond a trilogy.  I don't think too many people even understood the message of these movies anyway.

Original SAW was really good, the rest bored me to tears, I can't even remember the last one I watched, they all just blend into one.
