At work we tried formatting some old computers with XP to give away for a small fee but we cant seem to update them.. We always get an error and I dont know if this is happening to all freshly installed copies or current ones as well.  Need your help XP users

There have been a lot of problems with Windows Update on XP for some time now; there's a big thread about it here on Neowin. It happens even with freshly installed copies, for me it just sits at the "searching for updates" part forever and eats up 99% of my CPU. People posted some workarounds that sometimes help and I used the WSUS Offline Updater to download them all to a flash drive which finally worked for me. Being that support is ending soon it's unlikely that Microsoft will ever fix the problem. Here is a link to the thread: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1176387-xp-windows-automatic-updates-svchostexe-100-cpu-ms-did-something/

You mention that you get an error though so for you it may be something different entirely. Can you post the error here?

How about some details?  Like the error message/code?

Error number: 0x8024D001

I already researched it and tried all possible fixes. Some people manage to get it working last month.. But now it seems noting work.. So far on 4 laptops and one that has not been formatted .

Correct, I can confirm that both fresh installs have the error code when trying to go to windows update and that downloading standalone Windows update 3.0 does fix the issue.

Not anymore. Tried it and no longer fixes it. has been tested on 3 other laptops

I installed a dell OEM copy of XP in a VM and for the life of me couldn't get it to work no matter what so I gave up. But on new installs on desktops the windows update installer did seem to fix it. but I haven't done a new install in about 2 weeks.

Well if you can do a fresh install to confirm this fix no longer works it would be very helpful. If you dont want to its okay lol I just really want to make sure is all.

Since you are giving them away and XP support will end in a few months you might consider installing a much more up to date free OS on them, perhaps some version of Linux. The update problem with XP is a pain, it took all day before I finally got it to update but that was a few months ago. :)

lol thanks for the advice but I dont really have a say on what OS goes on them lol Linux would be sweet to put on them though.

I've always gotten around this issue by just downloading the latest IE for XP and installing it immediately. Does that not work anymore?

I installed IE 8 with the updates it came with the installer and still no go. Its weird because It would keep hanging on search for updates.  Left it on over night and downloaded them. it took an entire day and all it found was 106 MB of total of updates. Tried install and it would hang and wouldnt go anywhere. Then Restarted and got an error for trying to install again...

wsusoffline.net download, and run. Select XP, choose the updates you want/need, and let it download all the installers.

Copy the whole WSUSoffline folder to your XP machine.

Run wsusoffline client on XP machine.

It will require a few restarts, and re-running of the wsusoffline client, but it will bring the installation up to date, and allow windows update to function normally.

I did this on a couple of XP clean installs this week (yes XP!! I know waiting on final Windows 7 builds and application testing to be completed for these so we can ditch XP), and it worked fine.

I was able to successfully obtain updates on VM with a fresh install of XP after installing IE8 and the latest cumulative patch for IE8 with a reboot in between.

I'll look into this. Thanks! :)

I wonder why it happens at random. I tried installing IE 8 as well as the updates it came with..

I downloaded the cumulative patch and installed it separately; I didn't allow the Internet Explorer 8 install to download the latest updates.

Sometimes I wonder if this sort of problem is less to do with XP and a lot to do with Windows Update itself, I've had issues updating 8.1 before.

I know this sounds really basic, but make sure the time and date are set correctly. Windows Update won't work if they're not set right.
