Surface Dock Not Charging Tablet

Recommended Posts

Recently got a couple of hte new Surface docks for the first gen Surfaces we have here at work.  Everything is working on the dock but the dock is not charging the tablet.  I have tried 2 different docking stations and the same problem.  The docks  should be compatible with the frirst gen Surfaces so not sure what the prob is.

Anyone else have the dock?  Any problems?   I followed the info here which didnt help....

Edit:  Just to note, the light doesnt come on, on the dock, so not sure what the problem is.  Everything connected to the dock works, but not the charging of the tablet.

do you have more than one tablet to test with? it could be a bad port on the tablet

Trying to get another one to test with.  The seperate power cord for the tablet itself is working fine.

The Surface charges fine with the power cord that came with the tablet.  It isnt charging when connected to the docking station and using the docks power cord.  I know the dock has power because when I unplug the power from the dock, anything connected to the dock doesnt work.

I an get the light to come on if I turn the tablet off while docked.  However, when I turn on the tablet and log in, the battery is not charging...even tho the light is still on.  If I remove the tablet  from the dock and redock, the light stays off until I shutdown again.

Are there any setting in the config for turning off charging?

From the last link I posted i.e. if its using the power it may not be able to pull enough to charge correctly whereas when its off...................

  • Are the magnetic charging connectors clean and free of damage?
Check the connectors on both the power supply's connector tip and on the charging port (on the side of Surface itself). With the power cord unplugged from the outlet, clean the magnets on the Surface connector tip and the on the charging port with a soft cloth and a small amount of rubbing alcohol.

Not that I can tell

No problem with the mag connector. That works fine. The dock doesnt use a mag connector. Just has several pins sticking out that slides to connect to the Surface.

I did notice one more thing that makes me think I may have a hardware problem. I upgraded to Windows 8.1 yesterday. Was a 4hr hour PITA upgrade...but that is another story. I had a couple issues getting the Surface to turn back on after I shut it down. Took a few times before it turned on. Then I didnt notice it again and thought it was a fluke. I did have the same problem again this afternoon. This surface also had the charger just die for some reason. But who knows...hopefully know more tomorrow if/when I get another Surface to test with.

Hello,

Just to check, you are using the 48 watt and not the 24 watt charger with the dock?

I am using hte power cable that came with the dock.  So should be fine to power the tablet.

I turned the tablet off to get the light to come back ok (light is on on the dock when tablet is off).  The battery was at 84 percent.  So going to wait a few min to see if the battery charges when the tablet is off.   If it charges when the tablet is off, maybe I have a driver/software issue.

I did try 2 different docks and 2 different tablets.  Only difference is one tablet I upgraded to 8.1, the other I have not

Is it an RT or Pro? From what I can see on Microsoft's site the dock is only designed to work with the Pro/Pro 2.

Pro. 1st Gen.

I contacted support and am getting a replacement dock.  Funny thing is, they do not require the return of the old dock.  And another funny thing is that 2 brand new box DOA?

It was worth a shot. ;) Glad you're getting it replaced, but yeah, that does seem odd. Maybe it's just a manufacturing hiccup?

I figured it out.  Apparently our WSUS server was not setup to deploy Windows 8 updates.  They were downloading, but not going out to the systems.  I had someone here fix that.

Anyway, the first gen Surfaces need a firmware update in order for the dock charging to work.  Funny that MS support didn?t tell me that but hey, I am getting a free dock out of it since they do not want the ?defective? one back.

??I thought you had said the charging was working originally??

Only with the power cord/magnetic cord that originally came with the Surface.  Wouldnt work with the dock charging until I did a firmware update.  Someone that MS online or support does not tell anyone.  I even called support and their solution was to send a new dock.

I had the issue on the Surface Pro 1.  I believe the update was via Windows update that fixed the issue for me.   I have not had any issues on the SP2 or SP3.
