Internet database security (merchants)

Recommended Posts

I have a question based upon an issue. I spoke to my bank today and found out that "a merchant", VISA doesn't release the nme of said merchant, had their database compromised and millions of credit card account numbers were stolen. Mine was one.

Q: What is it with merchants and these databases with customer credit card numbers? Are they hacked by brute force attacks or are they simply because a merchant is too lazy to put proper security measures in place? I'm inclined to think that merchants, in cost cutting measures cut corners in the realm of security.

at any rate, new cards are on the way and my account is safe.

Hello,

It could be anything, ranging from a neophyte mistake in the unnamed merchant's security to a sophisticated attack that may have involved an insider.

If you want to try and find out more, you could try filing a police report, which might lead to more data being released to you, perhaps the name or just market sector of the merchant in question.

I don't think this is the best place of discussing how and why they have been hacked, as mentioned if you'd like to find out why and how, fill a police report or call or talk to your bank and I am sure they'll be more helpful than us and therefore I Am closing this thread!
