New Realtek HD Audio Drivers and weird problems

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Realtek just released it's latest set of HD Audio Drivers, R2.73. They just replaced the R2.72 drivers to fix some bugs with Windows 8.1. I was using a set of drivers Asus posted for 8.1 when it first came out and then I jumped up to the R2.72 package when it was released with no problem. Now after installing the R2.73 drivers I have some weird issues. First I have a set of Logitech analog 5.1 speakers and I know I won't get true 5.1 and I can only get some sound from my rears by using the speaker fill enhancement, that's fine. But now whenever I choose 5.1 in either the Realtek control panel or the default Windows one I lose all functionality of my rears completely, even in tests where it runs sound out each speaker individually. That always worked. Now I have to set everything to 7.1 and the rears seem to share the rear and side outputs. Also when I turn on 5.1 in the Realtek CP the rear speaker check box is grayed out and all speaker fill does is make some horrible delayed wavy sounds come out of the rears.

Am I just stuck with the last proprietary Asus drivers that worked now or can I do some kind of troubleshooting here. Maybe it's time to just get a half decent PCIE sound card? Any thoughts/Ideas?

Sorry to sound so jumpy but I always play music while I work and it drives me crazy if I can't or something interrupts it. I am sure some of you know the feeling.

Cheers,

OK, an update.

I reverted back to the "Official" Asus drivers for the Realtek on board audio on Windows 8.1 and things seem to be working as they should, I say seem because the speaker fill still sounds like S**T compared to the Windows 8 install.. Since then Realtek has released 2 new driver updates for Windows 8.1 but when I use those all my settings such as 5.1, 7.1, quad etc.. get changed around and sound comes out of any speaker it seems it shouldn't and stops coming out of those it should. It's as if the output mapping got scrambled somehow.

Am I destined to use only the drivers Asus provides now even though the Realtek are supposed to be universal for my audio chip and they are newer?

Thanks,

Realtek is making their driver mess since last two releases, I am using Realtek 2.72 installed using Device Manager update method since neither 2.72 nor 2.73 installer start for me on Windows 8.1 Pro.

Here is my thread:

Download ZIP driver and use Eric mentioned, Device Manager update method.

How should I do this. Leave the current drivers installed and update them that way or remove these, reboot and then try them the way Eric mentions? Also will removing them and doing the device manager install cause me to lose the sound manager?

Thanks,

Joe

now i know the 2.73 installer still has problem, for windows 8.1, only windows 7 was fixed.

Yes I think so. I just emailed Realtek support. Not sure how they are but maybe they will have some answer.

I use realtek on my Toshiba laptop as well. It works flawless. my thinking is, it "might" be a hardware to software issue. I've been using the same drivers for a while now and noted NO issues.

I don't have surround issues as it appears you have, I sure hope you can get it rectified. could you let us know what the issue was and keep us other realtek users up to date? thanks?

What happens when you run the installer in Windows 8 compatibility mode?

I have not tried it but I will add it to the list of stuff recommended to me.

Spoke to both Realtek and Asus VIP tech. Realtek said it's the way they map both the 5.1 and 7.1 profiles now. the "rear" speakers are just satellites they say and I should just plug the rears into the side output jack and there will be no difference than the old 5.1 profile. Asus however said they test their drivers specifically with their boards and if the latest drivers on their site work ok there is no reason to upgrade, They also said they are aware of issues with those new drivers on the Realtek site. I am going back to the Asus drivers.
