Hey Google Glass, you have company

Google Glass testers flitting about in Silicon Valley may want to tilt their retinal computers west next week, because Nissan is unveiling its own one-eyed contraption called 3E. In a promotional video showing an oiled, half-naked man convulsing uncontrollably, Nissan reveals what appears to be a web-enabled eye display. The 3E?which likely is short for ?Third Eye??will debut at the Tokyo auto show alongside Nissan?s other unorthodox concept, the BladeGlider.

Unlike Google?s more conventional, full-frame eyeglass design that looks like its lenses have been removed at the behest of a bully, the 3E has a chunky, peripheral-blocking frame that extends farther from the face and wraps behind the wearer?s head. Where Google projects digital images to the right eye, Nissan sends them to the left. (And if the California Highway Patrol dislikes Google Glass enough to write one woman a ticket, it may set up traffic checkpoints for the 3E.)

Beyond a brief description on Nissan?s Japanese website, we?re not certain what the 3E can actually do or why you?d want to wear it to your next 370Z meet-up. But given Japan?s penchant for heated toilet seats and other high-tech gadgets, we?re certain 3E will reach production at some point, especially as Google prepares to sell Glass sometime next year. At the Frankfurt auto show, Nissan sported a NISMO wristwatch prototype that can download vehicle data via Bluetooth and monitor a driver?s heart rate. Apparently the detailed telematics display in the GT-R just doesn?t cut it anymore.
