Official PS4 System reviews

Recommended Posts

Besides Polygon having the biggest MS fanboy on the internet in their ranks (Arthur Gies), not a bad review (nice looking site as well).

They recommend don't buy it yet..

I think you'll want one eventually. But, cool as the PS4 is, a lack of a must-play game means you can afford to wait. Do you need to have a PS4?

NOT YET

I guess Kotaku are also MS fanboys now? :p

If that's aimed at me, then no.

Arthur Gies is an individual, not a site. Although Polygon were heavily funded by MS.

Hardware receiving universal* praise - job well done sony. :)

Saw this scroll by on Twitter earlier, initial impressions from Ars Technica.  Some good, some bad, but they do note the review's not yet complete.

Yup, even Kotaku says their review is not final yet.

*I've only seen 2 reviews so far, please don't sue me.

Yeah, they also have a very interesting page layout for the review.

They certainly went in depth over all of the features, which is something I wanted to read about.

I think the one thing disappointing me the most are the launch titles. I still haven't picked one. The reviews that are coming out now are not helping me at all. Even KZ isn't holding up beyond the obvious visual prowess.

I'm seeing a pattern in game reviews commenting on how nice everything looks and then having problems with how the rest of a game works.

Looks like I may just be getting the indie games at launch, or play the free ones via ps+

I am puzzled by this - PS4 doesn't support Sleep & Resume but it does support Standby. Isn't Sleep same as Standby? :s

I'm going to guess sleep uses less power than standby? Not entirely sure myself, sure it will be in one of the first post launch patches.

It comes down to how they define those modes.

On a pc, standby is more akin to hibernate, which actually uses less power than just sleep.

Sleep and resume is in the next firmware update. Anyway, I don't understand how you can review a system when there are only a few games out for it. These guys aren't reviewing the system, they are reviewing the UI. Which we already knew would be an improvement of the PS3 UI.

sleep = cpu not active, nothing happens, suspend = cpu able to do tasks in the background ?????????

Why can't you review a system with just a few games?  You're not reviewing the games individually but how the system is as a whole, the UI, the online features, the apps and so on.  You don't need a large library to review the hardware and OS and services etc.

I agree with the reviews, it's good but you don't have to rush to buy one, which is why I'm not doing so.  I'll probably get it next year, at best in Feb, or if not then in the March-April period when I expect to see a few better games come out.

What do you mean?  They cover all of it:  OS UI, ps network, hardware, controller, launch games, etc.

Its definitely a complete review.  For anyone trying to decide if they want to drop $400 to own one on day one, this is important stuff to know.

Of course any next gen console will get a better library over time.

The Eurogamer review provides some better hardware insights

Yeah, its interesting that it draws so much extra power when jumping to the UI while in a game.

Otherwise, the sound levels are ok.  As they said, not as good as the ps3 slim, but better than the ps3 launch.  I will be interested in seeing their extended tests.

I also noticed that people are talking about the ps4 controller battery life being 7-8 hours.  That's certainly much less than the ps3 controllers.  I guess adding that light to the front, and the touchpad had more of an impact.

Not laud but a tad bit hot it seems.  They could've made it a bit thicker and it could've knocked off a good 10 degrees from the temps I bet.

Is that hot?

I used to remember the CPU on my PC hitting 60 odds when I overclocked it lol.

If it's as bad as they say they need to fix that quick, if my controller is going to last only a day of solid gaming then we've got a problem here.

Overlcocked it to what?   I doubt it was running at 1.6Ghz.      It's not alarmingly hot but they tested in a nice cool 23 degree room, they make a note that it could jump up when it's hot in the summer.   If it's close to 50 in a cool room what will it be when the room temp is 35+?    I don't think it's a problem but just saying that if it was a tad bit less thin they could've shaved off more.

I think it was Polygon who mentioned that in the review.
