Remote Play link speed, worries

Recommended Posts

In the IGN video for remote play it took 17 seconds for the Vita to make a link to the PS4. Is that crazy to anyone else? My 3 year old PC does a cold boot faster than that. I would probably be fine dealing with it for one day to test it, but there is no way I would go through that on a daily basis. Would you?

17 sec is actually pretty reasonable when you think about all the connections that have to be made/changed when it connects

really. if you're THAT impatient then i feel sorry for you

Agreed.  17 seconds is nothing.  But then people are so impatient these days.  Soon they'll be complaining because the don't suffer premature ejaculation, and sex takes too long.

I think the link speed is fine, but I do think the wireless connection is a bigger concern.

I've seen reviews mention that the connection is very particular (which is not shocking considering what its doing) and that means you can easily move out of range, even when you in the same room as the ps4.  So this isn't something that works reliably say in other parts of the house yet.

I'm sure they can tweak it over time to improve it though.  Part of the issue could be due to the fact that the ps4 does not offer 5Ghz 802.11N support.  Its limited to the 2.4ghz band, which limits throughput a bit.

I guess I am impatient then. Because there is no way I could deal with that. I complain daily about Adobe Illustrator taking 5 to 6 seconds to open. But seventeen seconds, I would force close it as unresponsive.

How is that relevant?  You just sound like someone who enjoys moaning...

Start the link, get a drink or a snack, and then walk back.

Because it is a long time to wait to use something that you expect to be instant. Maybe I have just been spoiled by SmartPhones, Tablets and PC's where pretty much everything is instant. Was jarring for me to see that in the video. Especially since the Wii-U link is instant.

correct.

im curious to know how old you are b/c if you remember anything from the 90s, then you know how long things used to take to load...

It's a race.  The woman's got 2 minutes (if she's lucky).  I'm busy getting my orgasm on, I can't be arsed to worry about hers, too.  I got ###### to do.  Like connecting my Vita.

Personally i don't expect this to work far from the console. I lose wifi connection to my router when i'm in my bedroom ... now i'll admit it's a bad cheap router but still. Considering the amount of data that needs to be sent for this to work i'm sure you'll need to be close to the PS4. Could still potentially be cool as a second screen for local multiplayer specially for racing games.

You must have a really cheap router. I can connect to mine a block away.

i am not really all that worried about the link speed more than i am worried that my connection between the vita and the PS4 will be a problem. I already have issues with Remote play on the PS3 being unplayable. and I have a rather nice router that should cause problems.

Average link speed on wireless is 122Mbps up from 78Mbps on my old router. sure its not 300Mbps on an AC router but its still nice.

And to think, when I was a kid, I actually had to flip a tape over to hear the second half.  Yes.. I had to stop what I was doing, open the tape player, flip the tape over, put it back in, and press play.

Also, to rewind stuff, to replay a song, I had to rewind, stop, check if it was where I wanted, if not rinse and repeat.  Sometimes I went too far and either had to fast forward, or listen to the end of song yet again.  NOTHING was instant.  You are damn right you are spoiled lol.

Maybe Sony is trying to bring back the 80's :D

"It used to take us this long to do such and such"  isn't a valid excuse. Things have progressed to the point where we should have instant (or closer to instant than 17s) connections.  Excuse makers are the reason that major companies **** over people with unfinished products.

Regardless, I would like to think we're a bit beyond waiting 12mins for a C16 to load from tape and I would agree with Op - 17 seconds of waiting (presumably with no progress bar) would be "has it crashed?" territory these days.

No, not even close, the reason companies release unfinished crap is because over-entitled impatient cry babies like you and the OP demand everything NOW and that's all you care about, me now

I guess you didn't read my post in another ps4 thread.

I don't expect it to be "now".  I never implied that, A 5-10s buffer for a connection would be fine, even though it is their own hardware they're connecting to, as thats about how long it takes for bluetooth, wifi, nfc, etc to make a connection dependant on hardware. (not to actually transfer things, but just make a simple connection)

And actually, my post inferred the opposite of what you thought it did so please do stop talking out of your ass. If you had any sense of reading comprehension you would realize that I said without the excuse makers (ie: you) companies might have to actually put some effort into their products or they wouldnt be bought by mindful consumers who expect better of a product that was made in 2013, (not the early 90's as you must believe), thus actually INCREASING THE WAIT TIME for the product, but making a faster, better product as a result. (Succinctly not "IWANTITNOW"). Is that being entitled? No. It's expecting a $500 product to be a $500 product.

If you want to be nostalgic go ahead, but I for one hated dial up, and am now quite content with my 10Mbps down, and faster connections, not having to rewind, and INSTANT play movies. .

PS, I'm not buying either console for a year or two so they can use you to beta test. Damn, that's quite the opposite of NOW isn't it?

and again, in case you missed it.

CLOSER TO INSTANT THAN 17 SECONDS

I really hope people are smart and connect their PS4's over a cable and not wirelessly, especially when using Remote Play.

When your PS4 and Vita are both connected wirelessly, they can't transmit/receive at the same time and will have to take turns pretty much. So you're basically increasing the latency and halving the performance on both sides. For something like this that needs to be as realtime as possible you do not want that.

Connect your PS4 over ethernet to an access point with few devices connected to it on a clean band and you'll be perfectly fine.

Wifi to wifi cuts speeds in half on top of that doesn't it?

I am an idiot and that's exactly what you're referring to....
