Media Center Box/Stick

Recommended Posts

I need to get an upgrade for Media purposes due to my aging Samsung TV (plex app runs too slow now with the latest update). I am waiting till next years TVs for a new one.

So, I have looked and looked and looked for a media center solution, and I can't make up my mind, what's actually good, what's bad.

I want a small box/stick (do not want to build one, just spent a lot on my main system, and a new server)

I need it to run the Android Plex app, or the Windows Plex App (both are the best versions of plex)

Ethernet & WiFi (Ethernet more important)

HDMI out of course

Has no issues with remotes/keyboards etc

?Of course, have no issues playing 1080P content from Plex Server.

And, as cheap as possible, and this is within Canada prices.

Ideas, Suggestions....other?

A Sky Go box is just a rebranded Roku box, they're readily available across the world. They do a good job, the only criticism I have is that they don't support YouTube. But as you're gonna be using Plex exclusively(?) that'd be fine. You'd need at least a Roku 2 though, as the standard Roku does not have Ethernet.

Yea, but doesn't the Rokus not support many codecs, so my Plex Server would need to do more transcoding than I wanted (though it could do it without issue).

But, people love the rokus, I will check them out. Though, I dont even know how the Ruku Plex versions look or act. As I said the Android/Windows seem to be the best.

Yea looks like a crappy version of Plex.

Any other suggestions? Besides Chrome Cast, which can't do Plex, and isn't exactly available in Canada.

There are a lot of Android-based 'Smart TV' devices out there (There's a lot listed on amazon.ca). However I wouldn't really expect performance and ease of use to be high on those things as they tend to be quite unpolished as they just throw some hardware together and put stock Android on it. Might be what you're looking for though.

I picked up a Minix Duel Core box, for fairly cheap. I was tired of looking and researching and not being able to decide.

So, next week I will find out how it is and if it's good. If it is, I am going to pick up another, but the quad core version.

Thanks for the help guys.
