Assassin's Creed 4 on PS4 is 900p, will patch to add 1080P and AA

Marking yet another milestone for the killer franchise, Assassin?s Creed IV Black Flag on the PlayStation 4 is the first Assassin?s Creed game to be rendered in true native 1080p. In other words, the already gorgeous game will be, well? even more gorgeous when it sets sail on the PS4.

One small caveat: players will need to download a title update (available shortly after release) to enjoy the full 1080p native resolution.

Even without the title update, the game is undeniably stunning on next-gen consoles. Indeed, as Associate Producer Sylvain Trottier suggests, some players might not even be able to tell the difference. That?s because the game, as shipped, is being rendered on next-gen at a resolution that?s very close to 1080p (900p, if you?re curious), and the upscaling process barely adjusts the image.

?If it?s running at 720p vs 1080p, you?re going to notice the difference, by far,? Trottier explains. ?But if it?s set at a resolution that?s very close, where most of the pixels are already there in internal processing, most people won?t see any difference.? Those who can spot the differences might note that the game would be, in some very subtle ways, slightly less crisp but a tiny bit smoother.

But why ship at 900p in the first place? To meet an essential goal: deliver a visually brilliant game at a steady 30 frames per second (the industry gold standard for open-world games). Finishing the game at 900p gave the development team the extra room in terms of the GPU and CPU usage to ensure the framerate never dips below 30 frames per second. The team then used the time between the ship date and the release to focus on a title update that could deliver native 1080p resolution on the PS4.

But they didn?t stop there.

?The most important part of this title update is not necessarily 1080p native resolution,? Trottier smiles. ?It?s the fact that even when we were done with the project, even when we were finished with the certification and everything else, even when most of the engineers had started to work on other projects ? like we always do at Ubisoft ? some of my engineers continued to work on Black Flag and they even developed a brand-new anti-aliasing technique.? (Anti-aliasing is a technique used to diminish the occasional appearance of jagged edges in computer-generated graphics.)

Indeed, along with the full 1080p native resolution, the visuals have been improved even further, simply because the engineers knew that with the additional time they could do even more. So they did. And now, not only will you see every single miniscule pixel in glorious 1080p native resolution on the PS4 ? exactly as the artists rendered it ? but you?ll also see an even cleaner, clearer and more brilliant moving image than anyone even imagined. (Pay special attention to finer details like the ropes on the ships if you want to get an eyeful of what we?re talking about.) And the best news for gamers on the latest next-gen systems? This anti-aliasing technique will be available for both PS4 and Xbox One.

I'm pretty sick of hearing about screen resolution on both of these consoles to be honest.  Theres threads and forums on the internet dedicated to monitors that have less fudging discussion on resolution!!

If this isn't proof of how rushed these ports have been, I don't know what would convince you.

Is AC4 running at 1080p/30 on both consoles then?

Agreed. Glad I'm staying clear of anything that's cross-gen.

im fairly positive the XBO version is 1080p

OXM got some hands on with the game recently, and they've posted video footage of gameplay of the XBO version

i pixel counted over 10 lines, and it matches up to native 1080p. heres a few samples

perfect stairsteps

and heres the 1080p screenshot i took and used for the examples if anyone who knows how to pixel count wants to verify

You might be sick but it's still nice to know at which resolution a game is running at.

So you don't care about image quality, that's nice i guess. Unfortunately for you however, many other people do.

see BF4. it isnt 1080p native.

Not every game will be, but most should.

On the topic of scalers anyway, did you look at the X1 COD pictures? A scaler can't simply work a miracle on a title below 1080p.

No it doesn't work miracles, but it does show that all scalers are not created equal and a good scalper can actually look better then not using one at all.

Clearly native is still better than scaling though.

just pointing out the quality of the scaling of the ps4. even comparing the 720p of ghosts on the ps4(pre patch), hawkman pointed out in another thread that there is loss of detail when compared to the xbo version, which was clearly visible in the comparison shots. bf4 is scaled, whose to say future games are guaranteed 1080p? alot of current gen games are sub HD. scaler could become very important down the line.

From looking at the video, and the close-ups, that's 900p.

i used the same method DF uses to figure out native resolution, counting steps and pixels in the lines. how did you determine 900p from the close ups?

All we have so far - http://www.examiner.com/article/assassin-s-creed-iv-black-flag-is-1080p-on-ps4-post-patch-900p-on-xbox-one

Playing advocate though don't you think if it was 1080p Ubisoft would be letting off fireworks to make sure everyone knew? Being one of the few 1080p titles on One that is.

Considering the images, and the confirmation there. I pretty much take that as 900p.

Because resolution is the end all be all for image quality! /s

That image was prolly more helped by the AA than the bump to 1080

the examiner article is not convincing. It is using videogamer as the source, and is basically assuming. You know what I'll try to find the exact same sequence in the 900p ps4 version and compare the lines I posted above.

Problem is, with all the focus on resolution we're going to get punished with the obvious downside - 1080p is going to make the consoles more likely to slow down when things get busy.   I think any game should balance resolution against fludity of gameplay (and the other things that effect IQ)  - stutters really nark me off and can ruin a game.  In these early games it's all the more likely given devs are dealing with new hardware and won't be getting the best out of it for a while yet.

I can see MS/Sony desperate to 1080p things to the detriment of the actual game simply because it's now suddenly a big PR item.

Put it this way, there's a good reason I don't use a 1440p screen with my PC - I want 60fps with all the eye candy on..
