Two Internet Services

Recommended Posts

I want to have two separate internet connections within my home. For a few reasons.

The last time I researched this (like 7 years or more ago) the only way to do this would be with one being Cable, one being DSL.

Is there anyway to do this with Cable only?

Also, assuming its possible. Is it possible to have these two connections connect to one computer? I need one doing one thing, and the other well doing the other stuff.

Do you have 2 cable companies in the area - then you should be able to get 2 them both. Contact them for details, etc.

Sure you could connect them 2 different nics on your computer, or even wireless and wired, or you could use a dual wan router, or you could connect both routers lans to switch and set one to 192.168.1.1/24 and other to 192.168.1.2/24 etc.. and then depending on which connection you want to use use the other gateway.

Possible configurations is vast.. Really need some details of what your wanting to do.

To be honest without details and just making assumptions and guesses I would think it prob better to just update the speed of whatever connection you currently have, or switch to service that is faster vs doing 2..

Other than failover/backup if your primary service goes down what are you actually wanting to do with this second connection and we can see if possible.

Streaming what? One site? Serving the streaming? Or getting the streaming?

And you want to do this from 1 computer? Why can this streaming be done on a different computer and connection, etc.

Are you talking netflix? Or hulu/youtube ? Or are you wanting to serv up live porn related cams, etc.?

Dude without details its impossible to help you! I stream video from sites all over, I don't need another connection. Million of internet users don't need a second connection, etc.

So what are you doing that you feel you need a second connection? Maybe your just doing something wrong, or have a problem with your connection/setup and that is why you think a second connection will fix it?

There are lots and lots of ways to join/loadbalance/use multiple internet connections - but without some actual understanding of what your trying to accomplish I can not tell you which would be the best way to do it.

The only reason I can think of to do this is that you're on some pitifully slow DSL/dial up connection that some one else is paying for maybe, whether within your residence or not, and you maybe can get a faster tier by getting a second account, without having to mess with current setup?

Could be also you just have money to blow?!

Otherwise, yes,

Just get a faster plan, if possible.

I want to stream my content from my Plex Server to a family member. When I upload (which this would be doing) I can't use my internet, everything is slow.

So a second connection would solve this. It has to be the same computer because, I want this computer downloading as well, but not from that connection.

Throttle your upload speed to like 80% of what your max speed is in Plex, has to be a setting. Secondly, upgrade your connection package to something with a higher upload limit?

This can be achieved with any internet connection (cable and cable, cable and dsl, dsl and dsl etc) You can accomplish this by purchasing a router that supports dual wan capabiliies. Sonicwall, Watchguard are a few that have this capability, some of the cheaper routers such as Dlink and Linksys also can do this. With dual wan you can configure load balancing (keeps internet speed balanced so you dont drop speed) as well as failover (one isp goes down you still have internet access)

Let me know if you need more assistance.

So instead of fixing your router/plex settings you want to spend money on another connection? Does not compute!

What is your upload speed? Streaming video takes a bit of of bandwidth - your not going to do this wit 2 dsl connections even that have 512K up.

I would not even attempt to serve up video streaming via my 5mbit connection up.

I would just setup sync of videos to their network, like dropbox or something - and then they can watch the videos over their own network speed. Something as easy as owncloud would work, and then you can just put what videos they want to watch in their folder and it will show up on their computer ready to watch.

So what upload do you have, and what download do they have - and what can you upgrade your package too for upload speed?

But to accomplish what you want could be done a few different ways.

You could run 2 different local networks from your different providers and have connect into the same switch and give your box 2 different IPs one on network 1, second one on network 2.

You could use 2 different networks and 2 interfaces in your 1 computer.

You could use the same network on the lan side, and just connect your 2 connections via ports on gateways you get from your isps, or use a switch and then either 1 or 2 interfaces on your box. And forward to IP your using that you want to serve up your plex server.

You could get a dual wan router and setup policy routing to only talk to your family friends network with connection B, etc..

There a lots of different ways to skin this cat.. But I really would not pay for an extra connection just yet.. What are the speeds you both have currently up and down. And have you thought about sync/download vs streaming. Where you could limit these speeds, you could have these transfers happen off hours when neither of you need access to your internet pipes, etc. etc.

Using plex myself and steam to my phone or iPad at work with no issues. But i get better result though my home VPN service then the plex way. What about the new cloud service they have.

Here's the thing, your not trying to use your internet to download other stuff while your at work I would have to assume ;)

And what upload speed do you have?

Here is yet another option - how much does internet cost you per month? For 10 quid a month ($15) us I have a seedbox in the UK, it has unlimited upload and download. And hat 10Ge connections - run whatever streaming service you want on such a box, then stream your video from there, etc. Or have your family members download from there, etc.

The lowest cost box that I am on gets 400GB of storage, that is quite a few movies..

I find it unlikely that paying for 2nd internet connection is the best way to skin this cat to be honest.

You could probably just get a second line for cable. I know Charter here will do it and with DOCSIS 3.0 you could probably get a bonded connection but you may have to pay for a business line.

I could be mistaken but I think Windows supports channel bonding with multiple NICs but it may only be available in server versions.

My download is 45Mbps, upload is 4Mbps.

I have my 15TB server, with Plex, this is what I want streamed to my sister. To make things not cause issues on my end, it would have to stream at 2Mbps, at the minimum I want her connection to be 4Mbps (i tested, and the 4Mbps quality makes a huge difference).

So that's the situation. If I had another connection, I could get one that maybe has a higher upload, but that server computer has its own connection for downloads and the uploading. And the rest of my computers and devices have their own.

Note, we are in two totally different locations, her download is well over what is needed. I think it's 30Mbps download. It needs to be streamed vs synced or whatever you said, as Plex works this way, and I want her to have access to EVERYTHING, not just certain items I synced.

VPN slows connections no? And QoS has never worked for me, causes more issues then wanted. And I do not want to limit anything I have.

Well then you put your library online, or get another internet connection.. But does not seem cost effective to me, why not just pay her $8 a month netflix subscription.

I doubt your talking TBs of home movies :) And your library can not compare to netflix ;) hehehe

Put your library online, thats exactly what I am doing? lol

And yes, my collection is bigger and better then Netflix, and well Netflix Canada is even worse then the US version.

Thanks for the convo, I just needed to know it was possible to do :)
