Good news indeed. Let's hope Xbone sells well too next Friday and PS4 in Europe on the 29th. Like Yoshida said in an interview to Greg Miller (IGN) recently, Sony needs MS to succeed otherwise all the "console gaming is dying" hypberbole will come to fruition. We don't want our favorite games going to iOS and other tablets. :|

That's just Sony trying to imply that they are that important to console gaming. They are not, whenever a company dies, another will rise out of the ashes. It happened during the last crash in the 80's and if Sony were to die, it would be no different now either.

That sounds right, 3 million should be possible unless the problems are bigger than we think.     If they are more people will just hold off until a few months when they feel it's safer to buy it etc.

I can almost guartantee world-wide numbers will now suddenly become important to report for MS

Edit: But on a serious note, NA is Sony's weakest region too. I hope to God that PSN can stay up once Europe and Asian markets get their grubby little mitts on this thing.

Sony are extremely important to console gaming whether or not you like them is meaningless.

Companies don't just rise with billions to spend on creating a console, let alone a successful one. Look at Ouya. If anyone was to say MS Sony or Nintendo aren't important, they're clearly not a gamer.

Yeah well guess what, Nintendo was one of those companies to rise out of the ashes of the crash of 1983. They don't HAVE TO spend billions of bucks out of nowhere to be important.

<snip>

A crash will happen again at some point, especially when marketplaces get flooded with (indie) crap.

If Sony were to perrish, then there are other companies with enough content that could take over, like Apple or Google for example. Heck, the Steambox might even obliterate what we now know as console gaming in the near future.

I think Xbox One should easily match that come Friday.  I can't see them not having at least 1 million preorders given how large the 360 base already is.  Long term however Microsoft needs to start making plans now because long term belongs to Sony and I say that as an overall Xbox fan.  Everybody knows that Xbox One will sell jack in Japan and frankly most of the Asian market.  The good thing for Microsoft is that the Japanese market is the smallest market for Sony and Nintendo as well (except portables).

The only way Microsoft can gain extra numbers long term to compensate for the loss of sales in Japan will be to make those exclusive deals with cable/satellite providers or even cell phone providers.  Sign up for two years of cable (which you are already paying for to begin with) get a $100 or $200  Xbox One.  That would sell a huge number of consoles to people who otherwise might not think of getting one but might say why not I'm already paying for the cable service.  Without those exclusive agreements I don't see how Microsoft can ultimately sell more consoles than Sony in the long term considering they will never sell anything in Japan.

Impressive, but will things hold up and continue with steady sales after the initial rush and the holidays?

I kinda doubt microsoft will match these numbers, atleast with this speed. They turned off many with their horrible initial plans(and not all will have went back, even with the big 180), they're forcing people to buy an accessory that is unwanted by many, and they're charging significantly more for a machine that is weaker. Microsoft would need more than luck to match or exceed sony's sales on day one.

I know what you're saying, but personally i'll put money on them matching, if not surpassing. We'll see though.

It's certainly an interesting ride this gen.

Who's "they"? Console gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry. It's FAR from dead. The term I always here is "PC Gaming is dead", which also isn't true, but console gaming has taken a huge chunk of games away from the PC to Consoles.

It seems every console generation is billed as the last. I think it might be more wishful and spiteful thinking by some folk.

Sony is extemely important to console gaming.  They ushered in the new era of 3D, deep, and broad videogaming on the console.  I truly believe without the Playstation things would not be close to where we are today.  In my opinion there would be a much bigger blow to console gaming if Sony were to fall than if MS were to fall.

that's your opinion. but if you look at Kinect, in 3 years, more than 1/3 of xbox 360 owners went out of their way and paid $100-$150 for an optional accessory. there is a huge demand for this kind of stuff.  the $100 price difference also gets you more. over a generation that will last 8+ years, that isn't even an issue for most people. its not even the price of 2 games. factor in the other stuff like tv integration (hello 100 million cable subscribers in the U.S),all the multimedia, the software, the future with apps, the sports partnerships, the software.

If someone has deluded themselves enough to believe one of the big 3 disappearing isn't important then there's no way you'll change their mind. That's some deep settled brain washing.

Microsoft touted kinect as a major thing, people bought it because it looked cool.  How many people bought the Wii because it looked cool... lots.   Most people that bought one don't even use it anymore.  I don't think the demand game wise is what you think it is.. it has practical uses yes.. but it's not the next generation of gaming by any means.    Many people are also getting away from cable subscriptions and going purely internet based (Hulu, Netflix, etc).   Also many of the partnerships are sports related.. not everyone watches sports.   I still believe 100% the xbone is a very target market.. and has many things that in a few years will be un-used, or just no longer relevant.   With the changes in technology eventually TV's will have all the power of the xbone (app switching, pip apps, etc) so to have a console that does all that isn't needed.

That's just my opinion though.

Im amazed at how anti-sony some people are.  It's like a sony rep came and killed their family dog.   We need major players in console gaming.  I don't see the steam box being one as it is just a computer running steam in big picture mode.  Ah well, there will always be people set in their ways.. and any positive about the opposite has to be brought down.

You're preaching to the choir, the same can be said for some here and being anti-MS.  But let's not say that or we're all fanboys.      I'm sure though that 20 years ago, or so, before the PSX hit the market and Sony wasn't in it that people said the same exact thing about Sega and the console business.  But look where we are now, Sega is long gone from consoles and someone else moved in to take their spot, in this case Sony and later MS.   If you think that one of the big 3 leaving would mean doom then no, it wouldn't.  Someone else will show up to fill in the spot, don't know who because the big 3 aren't going anywhere anytime soon but that's just how business works.  If someone else thinks they can come in and do a better job with consoles then they will, it could be some other tech company,  it could be Apple with a updated Apple TV,  It could be Google with something android based or w/e.    Through the history of gaming and consoles we've always had a few big companies that seemed to run the show but at some point the market got hit and they ended up being replaced by someone new.  Atari?  Sega?   To say it couldn't happen again isn't correct, you can't be sure about anything.  And it's not like Sony, overall as a company, is looking so hot financially.   And Nintendo dropped the ball with the WiiU so who know what to expect from them in the future.   Nothing is certain though and the market always changes.

the fact remains is that people bought it. they bought the wii, the ps move, the Kinect. the demand is there, even if the support was lacking. this time around, Kinect has great support. its part of the system. its integrated in the whole environment. its not only about game anymore either.
