The PS4 does voice commands without the need of the camera peripheral

Recommended Posts

Exactly. If the system isn't built with commands in mind, a good mic won't help you. You need a combo of good hardware and good software.

A really good voice control system is not easy to pull off. You can put together a simple system with basic support without a ton of effort, but to really make it standout, you have to pit in a lot more effort.

Good point, I know for certain as US sgs3 doesn't understand me as clearly as a UK one due to my accent

edit

(Sorry, I posted half cocked so to speak, I should have added if the English UK isn't installed on the US version, which my brother in law's phone didn't at the time)

IMO it seems like they knew that selling at 499 like MS would not make much sense because lets face it eye toy is not anything compared to Kinect so they removed it last minute and changed their tune suddenly about gesture and voice controls so they could come in at 399 and everyone took it hook line and sinker and so they thru in crap voice commands thru a mic so they could say they support it.  Again ONLY my opinion but if they could of figured out how to be at 399 and not go bankrupt including pseye they would have and would have ben talking up gesture controls out their left and right. Don't think for a minute they were not planning on it just like MS is doing with Kinect.

Considering voice controls aren't needed in the first place.. I don't see why it needs to have an amazing implementation.  However, for those that do want it, I am sure they will be improved over time, as voice recognition/control is 100% software based.

If they're going to be there at all, they need to be implemented in a way that makes them usable, easy and straight forward.

I've seen plenty of half-ass implementations of voice control, that are rough at best.  It comes down to needing to improve the range of the sound (so that Open has more variation), and adding more commands that can be translated into system actions.

Are those seriously the buds they're bundling with the PS4?

The same Sony used to pack a better pair of headphones with their Walkmans about 10 years ago. They really have lost their touch.

@Trooper, how is the integration (or flow of the ps4) as a whole on the PS4?.

Does everything feel well integrated, or more like a machine that can do a bunch of random things?

Does it feel natural?

I see a ton of videos on the share feature, and that looks like a very natural, and well integrated part of the ps4. Does everything else feel that way as well?

Those earbuds do look horrible. The look like they would break just by looking at them.

Probably not to far of with the eye toy bit, but I'm going to say they had every intentions of including the headphones/mic from the beginning, as they would have had to adapted the controller to support the headset.

Voice commands will improve a lot I would say over the course of the PS4's life. But its no big deal. xBox wins hands down at the min.

Generally for advanced devices, I think they should use advanced voice recognition not voice control/commands that has a library of commands. it works better is actually designed to learn and can be expanded on simply by adding commands to a simple list of commands that should be recognized and what they do. And it allows for intelligent compound sentence recognition, ala Siri where you can simply say "text message I'll be home in 10 minutes to name of girlfriend" and it'll analyze and  understand what you want and send the text message. And voice recognition in the form of the xbox also allows you to find the music and videos in your library without typing.

For sure, I completely agree.  Talking to devices should be natural, and not a series of robotic commands.  Being able to say: Xbox sign in to skype, and start a call to mark yolo.  Would be amazing, being able to talk to a device and have it know what you want to do instead of having to do things like: Start Skype,   Press Enter,  Call Mark yolo.

I believe the controller only has a speaker for some reason.

You are right! It does talk and make some sounds.. I guess the mic is on that headset. I couldn't hear my friend real good, I will try to get a better one.

Yeah, the share button works great. Its a small thing, but it just works. I've done a few test clips with the recording option and that also works fine. The options for editing is a bit limited, but it gets the job done. The share feature overall is well done.

As for the rest of the system, well its not exactly the same. As I remarked before, there are areas of the UI that just don't feel comfortable to me. The activity feed is a mess and getting to settings/options can be a pain either because they are buried in text menus or because they are not in the place you would expect them. The store is better, but it does lack useful filtering options and there is something about the layout that just doesn't feel comfortable to my eyes.

Of course some of my issues are subjective, so it will depend on how much you like the base UI design if your going to agree with my impressions or not.

Isn't the mic built into the controller? With that said, that headset is lackluster.. need to find an upgrade

There's a speaker in the controller, but no mic.

I do wonder if the voice command software is the reason they're not yet supporting bluetooth or USB headsets?

That could be useful for searching either console's store.

Well if you know what you're looking for anyway.

That's the problem with most of these "app" stores, if you don't know what you're looking for you'll never find it, sometimes not even then.

XBL and PSN was not as encumbered by this issue in the past since it only had a limited amount of full games and a filtered"arcade" section that. With the open door policy of the new generation I fear will get the mobile App Store bloat, but we'll see.

Ever since Linux did it's package managers, app stores have never been good for finding the good stuff.

I must have missed this news, but that's pretty good for those who like those features (Y)

Its a nice little bonus, but anyone that is interested in using such commands would be better served with the Ps eye.

Uhm.. for those saying they prefer the kinect approach.. users CAN buy the PS Eye, thankfully not included, and use it for the voice control.

I don't think people are going to be "thankful" that the Eye isn't included when it doesn't have any support from the developer community...
