I'm considering getting my fiance a SSD for her computer. and I know there's big quality differences between the brands. 

 

so what's a good speedy SSD brand that's not the most expensive but reliable?

Probably going to get a bunch of replies for Samsung. Very happy with the few that I have.

Samsung 840 Pro is a favourite around here, but I personally give preference to OCZ :)

The Samsung 840Pro is the goto SSD for almost everyone these days, will be my next drive.

 

Corsair Force GT are great too. I have a Force GT 240GB and its been performing great since I got it.

I've got an 840 Pro and love it.  We're using regular 840s at work.  Plan on getting their EVO drives from here on out.  You might check those out.  The EVO is a step above the regular 840, and the Pro is above that.

hmmm my fiance used to work top level complaints dep on Samsung support. no her favorite brand :) but the 840 is the second cheapest 250 drive I see, so if they're good I suppose I'll go with that. 

 

got myself a free intel drive from a broken lenovo laptop that was twice the price when I checked the price on it :)

Then I just need to find a decent frame for it to fit it in a tool less 3.5 bay. the one I got for mine didn't work so it's just laying "loose" ish now.

Intel and OCZ are also good, OCZ got some bad press with failure rates on their older drives, but as far as I'm aware have been fairly stable from vertex 3 onwards.

As others have said, Samsung has been great. I started off on the 830, and that is still going. I now have two 840 Pro's that are fast. Also have had good luck with Crucial M4, and Intel SSD's. I have not had good luck with OCZ (nor my friends).

I've had two Kingston V300s for a few months now, and they've been excellent and are really fast (a few 100MB/s read and write - perfect for video editing).

 

Stay away from Chinese brands.

The Samsung 840 Pro SSDs are extremely expensive. Waste of money, I'd say.

 

You can get SSDs for much cheaper, with equally impressive speed/reliability, from other quality brands such as Kingston, OCZ and Toshiba.

Yeah, I told people that too, but then my Agility 4 died on me.  :/

 

Samsung, Crucial, Intel, they all make good drives. Honestly even some of the store brand ones are just relabeled drives from someone else, and they use a lot of the same controllers. IIRC, Samsung is the only company that builds them completely in house.

I'd agree with you here. SSDs are a dime-a-dozen these days, but those two companies really stand out right now.

 

Intel is still known for their solid reliability, but they just dont excite me. OCZ has been in a lull lately, but I've always liked their products. I'd recommend them too - the Vector line is great.

Samsung's 840 pro's and EVO's are the 2 best SSDs right now

coming up close behind are the OCZ Vertex 4s then the Intel SSDs

I've used OCZ exclusively since the very first Vertex model, and I've never had any issues.  They're my preference since their prices are typically good.  As was already mentioned, they got a bad wrap due to issues with SandForce, but that wasn't just limited to them.  Everybody had issues with those junk controllers.  Those days are long passed though.

 

Obviously Samsung is probably the top notch one to get, but it comes at a price.  The 840 Evo is probably the best value at the moment.
