Half-Life remake Black Mesa given retail go-ahead from Valve

Recommended Posts

Newsbrief: The team behind fan-made Half-Liferemake Black Mesa has been given the go-ahead by Valve to sell the game as a retail product via Steam.

The re-envisioned game, put together over the course of several years by Half-Life fanatics, was greenlit just over a year ago through Steam Greenlight. Now Valve has given the team permission to sell the remake.

The studio noted that the free version of the game will remain available, and be updated alongside the paid version. The latter is simply an option for players to support the team, it said.

Looking forwards on buying the game ! Nostalgia will surely overcome me as soon as I'm in the Black Mesa Facility.

I do hope they haven't missed the original artwork of the game while updating it.

Black Mesa is a remake of the original Half-Life in Source. It is pretty much built from the ground up.

It is awesome too. Give it a try, it is free.

The paid version is going to have some new stuff in it but mainly to help devs build the next part of the game. (Xen).

It's one of the best Mods out there, and we all know what tends to happen with great Mods and Valve noticing them. This is the best they could have hoped for.

Pay for a mod? Hell no. Such a thing should never happen or ever have to option of happening. Mods are supposed to be completely free. No pay option and no nags(yes, the free version WILL have nags, i guarantee it) to try to get you pay for it.

Yes, they're totally going to magically modify the entire internet and add "nags" to an already released project. Good one.

What about Counter-Strike? Team Fortress? DayZ? Red Orchestra? Garry's Mod?

The Black Mesa team have done a fantastic job with the game. With Valve's blessing, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be rewarded for their work.

I personally believe that you get what you pay for.  If you want something great, you need to pay for it IMO.

Being that I never played the original Half-Life I'll most likely be picking this up....on sale...a steam sale :P

Garry's Mod, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress.. all those games started as free mods but then evolved into paid software. It's not unheard of.

No, Mods are supposed to modify the game: enhance it, change it or even make it a completely different thing. The value that it brings to the game world can, in fact, sell more copies of the original game; i remember back in the days of Half Life the gazillion mods of different weapons textures, models and not even new levels were made but different games as well (Gunman Chronicles, for example), as mods. If these mods bring more value to the original game then why not sell them and give the team that worked hard on them a reward for they work? Oh, i forget, the gamers satisfaction should be the only reward those folks of Black Mesa should get...

and yes, i would buy it: that initiative by Valve gives more incentives to others so they can work on Source engine to produce new and great content.

Nags in a game that was released like a year ago? unless with an update and even that...not sure if serious

Yet you have no problems paying for offical "mods" on xbox/PS3?

haha, pretty much! Valve knows how to make good games, and Dota2 + icefrog involvement is truly testament to that.
