Apologies, can't load video for some reason BUT like PC's wouldn't the voice command have to learn for a bit before being flawless?

Hopefully because that does seem a bit 'kinect 1'ish.

Yes. We already know to expect this with Xbox One and despite initial hiccups, all the reviews seem to say its a pretty excellent feature.

It's one guy in a quiet room with an American accent. What would it have to learn? Just curious as Google Now and Siri (I've seen friends using it) works from day 1. Even understands my Scottish :P

For some people, others still need to train it, there's plenty of articles around discussing it for both Apple and Google. Star Trek perfect voice recognition doesn't exist yet.

Considering they would have primarily coded it for the American accent that demo seemed like it was awful.  That would aggravate me having to repeat commands so many times.

It's kind of interesting that Destin had no problem with his commands.

 

What's not so interesting is that your initial comment was the only thing you took away from the video...  :rolleyes:

 

Oh, and some of the "not working" things are just him not using the proper commands.

I think it has to do more with cadence of speech and being able to distinguish distinct words. This was shown off a couple weeks ago by The Verge: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1186799-the-verge-exclusive-video-our-first-look-at-xbox-ones-voice-activated-dashboard/

They struggled with it too, but the success rate was still high, and they hadn't had time to get used to it.

I've been watching the video, and often he gets the commands wrong, you have to learn them.   A few other times I think they didn't register because he's rushing the commands.   What I mean is that it seems like you have to give it a small pause after you say Xbox.   So when you say Xbox, Go Home.  It'll pick it up because of the small pause after Xbox.  But at times he's got no pause between and that seems to effect it.

90% of the video is focused around voice commands... Or should I say the majority if focussed around Kinect.

but what genuinely surprised us is how well the Kinect-powered voice controls work. Navigating the user interface is usually easier using voice than it is with traditional joypad inputs, because the quality of the speech recognition is highly accomplished. We were impressed by the accuracy of the PS4 version last week, but its dictionary is significantly more limited than Xbox One's. Virtually every major UI option, game or app is accessible by voice on Xbox One and, by our reckoning, accuracy is probably in the 90 per cent range.

Indeed, it's not knowing exactly what to say that accounts for many of voice control's misfires, rather than issues with recognition itself. Some commands require an "Xbox" prefix, others don't; sometimes Kinect seems to be in listen mode, other times it isn't.

I noticed that as well, youshouldnot order commands likethis. Kinect must "activate" before you order it.

 

It's not "Xboxwatchtv" it's "Xbox Watch TV"

 

Perhaps it would be a good idea to think of Kinect as a foreign person who barely speaks your language or even a child, just relax and speak slowly. I have not had an hands on experience with Kinect, these are just my observations from videos.

In pretty much all the reviews I've read it does say it works but not 100%. Since I've got a thick Yorkshire accent, I hope it does work with me.

 

Doesn't that video have a lot of background noise and he was literally saying the wrong commands?

Exactly.  And instead of how amazing it would seem that you can actually do all the things you can do with voice you focus on one journalist that had to repeat himself a couple of times while admitting that he was still getting used to it.

I've seen most of the UI features before, this is one of the first times I've seen a live Kinect demo.

I think that's exactly where the learning time comes in, after you've said the command a few times and it's learned the way you say it then it should start to work close to 100%.    Even in the video, at the start he had trouble with the Go Home command but as time went on it looked like it worked better and better.   We'll see, I'm sure for some it'll work better from the start and for others it'll take getting used to.

It looks a lot better, I would only ask why two people with similar accents have varying experiences. Besides of course the IGN guy getting commands wrong. I would expect MS to update the software to be more natural going forward, shouldn't we expect Xbox to understand both go to Dead Rising and play Dead Rising? That in general is the main reason I think voice commands suck. They need to be natural, not so rigid you have to whack out your printed command list/memorise it.

 

Mobile phones seem to be pretty good at allowing discrepancies between saying things like "text John" or "send a text to John".

I doubt that will be much of an issue in the typical home environment, and most reviews are saying that the recoginition does work pretty well so I'm not concerned, but its still amusing.

What a surprise. Things not working as advertised. I have no hope that this will be able to differentiate between me and my brother and the voice recog looks patchy at best.
