(CNN) -- White supremacist serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin was executed Wednesday morning after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his final requests for a stay, the Missouri Department of Public Safety said.

The execution, which had been scheduled for shortly after midnight Wednesday, was delayed for hours because of court appeals. Franklin was administered a lethal injection at 6:07 a.m. CT (7:07 a.m. ET). He died ten minutes later.

Franklin refused his final meal and gave no final statement.

He was on death row for the 1977 murder of Gerald Gordon outside a synagogue in St. Louis. He was blamed for 22 killings between 1977 and 1980 in a bid to start a race war.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon denied clemency for Franklin on Monday, saying he had committed "merciless acts of violence, fueled by hate."

In addition to the killings, Franklin admitted to the attempted assassinations of Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt in 1978 and civil rights leader Vernon Jordan in 1980.

I still don't really understand why people reply to threads like this.

I mean who are you saying this to?

This isn't a Bruce Willis action movie...

It's a natural reaction. People need to vent at abstract constructions, it's a sanity mechanism.

Read "Civilization and Its Discontents" by Freud. He is clearer than me.

Crazy to think some countries still have the death penalty. :)

This was a state, not federal, murder case so it has nothing to do with national policy. Virtually all murders are prosecuted by the states.

That said, there are still federal and military death penalties. Murder on a military base, federal property, banks during a robbery (bank robbery is a federal crime), etc.

Yup just still strikes me as odd some countries still have it.

I hate the death penalty, I think its such a barbaric punishment for the 21st century!   The govt calls it capital punishment, but in my view it's murder by the state.

Look at how long it took for  serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin to be executed. He was 63 years old and he should have been left to die in prison.

And if innocent folks are put to death along the way, oh well!

One example (of many): http://www.innocenceproject.org/Content/Cameron_Todd_Willingham_Wrongfully_Convicted_and_Executed_in_Texas.php

How easy it is to act all high and mighty on a web forum. The death penalty has accomplished nothing, especially in terms of a deterrent. But I guess some people just have an appetite for death. For those individuals, I feel sincere pity.

How would you people that are so against the death penalty feel if there was a serial killer on a killing spree in your town, and he just happened to kill somebody you are close to? You would of course feel sadness. After that, you would probably want there to be no opportunity for them to have any satisfaction ever again. If they get to live in prison, guess what? You will not be content. I guarantee it. The only justice is their death. There are too many cowards with no backbone today.

What makes you think that everybody needs revenge to deal with the loss of a loved one?

Others might think that the death penalty would be the easy way out and would prefer them to sit out a sentence for the rest of their lives

I am all for that if they are unable to get too comfortable in prison.

Exactly... They're going to die anyways eventually. All killing them does is speed up that process. It doesn't make any sense.

I watch a lot of Lockup, and living your life out in prison is almost literally hell.

The vast majority of people incarcerated are non-violent or drug offenders. If we can make room for anyone to live out their life in that hell, it's serial killers.

While I disapprove of the death penalty, serial killers get no sympathy from me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not morning the guy, I just don't like capital punishment.

I can't even comprehend how you, firstly, think you know how others would feel & react, then secondly, why you reduce the whole thing to "your a coward".

Fascinating.

I'd like to welcome you to Norway, do you perhaps want to review the reactions of how most all of the surviving victims and families of victims of the 22/7 attack reacted, because they prove your "fact" wrong.

Oh, you can personally account for the majority of them? Also, I am not an expert on the prisons of Norway. Are they tough enough? Can the prisoners live very comfortably? If so, that is not much justice.
