Winamp shutting down on December 20, 2013

Recommended Posts

Winamp as a service must be hemorrhaging money if they're shutting it down and removing all traces in such a short span of time.

This doesn't include Shoutcast stuff though right?

Kinda depressing hearing this. Been using this since the early 2000's, I still use Winamp to this day. One of the best to ever do it IMO. I use the Lite version. (Y)

Can't believe this! Just put up a petition. To me, Winamp was a valuable piece of the internet history, just like Napster or Kazaa. R.I.P Winamp!

Post a link! I would definitely sign it. I love Winamp.

I grew up using winamp and no other player... now I will have to find a replacement at least until winamp no longer works on windows... how sad.

Maybe AOL is loosing so much money they're shutting Winamp down? I mean, seriously, the whole Winamp Pro thing was a disaster - I don't know anyone who bought a license.

I did after using winamp since W95, waah no more milkdrop :(

Yup, it won't suddenly stop working any time soon, well the parts that don't require web services anyway -- shoot even 1.0 still works.

R.I.P WinAMP, you introduced me to Mpeg Layer-III playback (0.92) back when I was still impressed with 8-bit console sound.

How the mighty have fallen ...

As much as winamp has been successful, integrated players & store have superseded standalone music players.

I think I am going to download a winamp build and the MMD3 skin just for the memories

I would love to hear what Justin Frankel has to say about it

I used to love winamp back in the day, but then it started to get really sucky, WMP started getting better. Now I use WMP for music, VLC for movies.

hehe i should have added i remember the good old days, you would go to a supermarket or book store and buy one of the many monthly pc/windows focussed magazines and they often did a top 10 list with software and everytime it was either winamp or winzip leading the list.

Sad. A staple of the early Internet days.

If anyone's seeking a Winamp-like alternative, AIMP is pretty close.

I have been a loyal winamp user, i've used it for 15yrs, i use the classic skin as i don't like the modern look, it also uses way less ram. I'm really sad to see the development stopped. I doubt it will be opensourced.

v5.66 was released today btw.

I hope it does so its legacy carries on. <3 Winamp (classic skin), light and bs free

Winamp is awesome - I've downloaded the latest update today. Copies of its latest download will be online on many locations but I'll store the latest download the day it goes down. Someone may step in and purchase it but who knows at this point.
