I always wear a masks when I open systems up. It should have been OH&S (occupational health and safety) policy where you worked too.

Bodily fluids is a reasonable thing to refuse working on (although I am not sure how you would know something was bodily fluids just by looking at it) tobacco smoke seems more like a flimsy excuse to refuse honouring a warranty.

I used to maintain machines that controlled cremators, they were full of of ashes . . now they were fun to clean out. Odviously cleaned them out outside but still got covered in "Dust" when the wind blew it all back at me :D

Most warranties won't cover tobacco damage anyway. It's an external factor which clogs up fans/airways/causes components to overheat. It can also damage LCDs.

Hello,

I didn't say you shouldn't charge them for cleaning, my point was you shouldn't refuse the job based on smoke damage. If it is beyond repair you try to sell them a new computer. Considering how much competition there is in this area it is silly to refuse perfectly good work.

Just the way I see it.

The problem is that some computers are beyond repair when there is tabacco smoke involved. It rusts the parts.

Just imagine (extreme example but so you understand) I have bought a computer from you with a 5 year warranty. Since I am a bad customer, I burn tabacco or/and other material near the fans before the 5 year is up (year 4 and 8 months). You get the computer and you smell the smoking material and the tabacoo but since you cover it, you would have to replace all parts that have been damaged by the smoke. It is the same thing as spilling water on it: External factors caused by you that damage computer parts.

Are you a smoker compl3x?

Yes, but I don't smoke inside so none of my devices are exposed to it.

I am not arguing that smoke can't damage devices, although the amount of smoke needed to do any damage would probably have to considerable and it wouldn't always be easy to prove that tobacco smoke caused the failure. The device may have failed for another reason and saying it was caused by smoke might just be a way to avoid honouring a warranty.

, I am arguing that if you work in a repair shop and someone comes in and says "fix this please" and the employee says "nope, can't do it, it has tobacco smoke damage" they are turning down work for a pretty stupid reason.

Spiders are not insects.

Apparently If your PlayStation 4 breaks, Sony doesn't want you returning it full of spiders or other infestations.  Which is fair.

I've worked on computers that were absolutely disgusting.  I've found dead roaches, roach feces, and even a mummified mouse in one.  At least they're clearly stating that if you ship them a console in that condition they won't subject their employees to biological hazards.

These posts are epic! :D

Back when you did repairs your refused to service anything that was damaged? What the hell kind of company did you work for?  :s

What's the big deal about tobacco? Put some gloves on.

smoke smell instantly gives me a splitting headache, couple people i know it has the same effect on.
