Hello,

I made a comment in console related news article so now I ask all of you:

Do you think the consoles war are one by the first console that can run homebrew/backup games/etc?

We saw how the Wii did...

I voted "no." I can't explain my reasoning as I don't understand it myself, but I read the question, took a moment to look back at previous recent consoles and just went, "nope. Homebrew doesn't really enter in to it."

I think this comes back to something Neowin suffers from badly.

Everyone (puts on battle helmet) here is ostensibly a power user or expert. What we look for in stuff is different from most.

I think that people like you and I are going to look for the ability to customise/home brew etc, but I don't think the average consumer is too phased by it.

So in general no >.< but on Neowin perhaps >.>

Not I, I think there's no console war, Just fanatics on either side of the fence

If you like the exclusives on one platform, then that's the one for you, if you have the money for both, all 3 or 4 then good for those too

I like the games more on PSX and PS2 than I did PS3, but the 3 redeemed itself in my eyes with Killzone, and a couple of other choice releases that were available on both Current Gen consoles, (as I couldn't afford both, I stayed with the one I had)

If it wasn't for Shadowfall, I would have probably looked seriously at the new Xbox, (even though the controller isn't to my liking, but that didn't stop me from getting a MegaDrive way back, just something to get used to)

Homebrew, and other emulators do have their advantages, if you miss some titles from previous gen consoles etc...

Thats why I stated the Wii example: First console to play homebrew/backup games/etc and possibily most sold thruout the last generation (maybe at the end the Xbox 360 started to beat it)

I absolutely believe the reason a large proportion of people bought the Playstation over the N64 was the fact that they could get them chipped and easily copy the game CD. I think a lot of people have then just carried on buying the next version.

I think that's it, that's what my mind was working towards. Your average user won't go and mod their console for homebrew, it's one of the more..."nerdy" things to do. That's why it won't be a deciding factor in any sales comparison (rather than "war").

Whenever (last gen) someone asked me what console I would recommend them, the first thing they wanted is for it to run homebrew/backup games/etc. They didnt care about better games, controller, etc... After that price.

Hello,

By console war, I ment the console that sells most.

Yes but 'war' just seems like a dirty word, So console 1 is selling in greater numbers than console 2, if you're not the one selling either, who cares? If you like Forza, for example, then the Xbox is for you. if you like GT5, then get the playstation, if you like picmin, then nintendo, it's honestly that simple in my eyes, the market's big enough  :)

Ola,

There's already a console out there that makes no distinction between homebrew and company developed games and its every unit comes with all the necessary tools for development. It's called Ouya.

Respecto.

Not in the least. Homebrew is really a niche group of gamers in the grand scheme of things. Most people buying these consoles have no idea what that even means. This idea came up 8 years ago too and I really don't think it made a difference this generation.

We all seen and read comments from flamewars when a console battle rages in the mist of the forums. We've all seen some pretty stupid comments along with a healthy dash of false information, some defending the console of the fanboy while others are trying to smash holes in logic to put down the other fanboy's console.

So, I think mostly it's what ever console can gather enough troops off the bat to wage a battle of war between fans, and that's probably why release titles are so important even though we all know it takes a while for developers to get to grips with milking the power from the console.

Also, it might be also why this time around both Sony and Microsoft have been on edge and drip feeding us information about key features, each one trying to wait and make amove to gain more followers before the console is released...

Finally, It'll be the reviews of your piers that makes you buy the console. You'll be more likely to buy into a console your friends also have so you can play games with them, resulting in one of the biggest kick in the teeth from Microsoft's announcement for online checks and account registration for games. Luckily they've retracted that, but I wonder how many people have flipped to the 'dark' side and gone for the PS4 as a result? I know a few people who have, and some have even said stuff it and gone all out PC now.

I do think playing backups to an extent helped consoles in the past, but since we have digital downloads of games, that should be a thing of the past.

Backups certainly helped kill off the dreamcast. A machine a head of it's time killed off by piracy 'backups'.

No as without looking at other commments, I will say this...

The userbase who actually care for homebrew/backup is tiny compared to the majority of users and thus has no significance in the winning of supposed console wars.

I tend to think it depends on how easy it is to mod a console. Look at the Wii, no knowledge is required. Just use a SD-card and some pre-made software packages and you're done. Heck, there are even tutorials on Google on how to soft-mod your Wii. And I consider myself to be one of the "nerdy" folks, but I still don't use a Wii. Had one and sold it. Not my cup of coffee, but then again, I saw a lot of customers, friends and people in general talking about how easy it was to mod the Wii and they got one.

I voted "no". Is there really a "war" between consoles? It all comes down to personal preference imho. Some go "gotta catch them all" and got all consoles, other stick to one or two. If you rephrase the question and say: does the possiblility of modding your console add to higer sales numbers? I think so, but how much? Not too much I think.

Not a chance, even if a few million people online care about it, 20x+ more of the general public do not.

People are too invested in online features now to care about/risk piracy, and methods of detection are infinitely superior to PS1/XB1/PS2 days.

No.

I think most people buy consoles for the games they offer, not if they can pirate the games for it.  I could pirate any PC game I want, but PC Sales are still declining.

I think that there are people who buy purly for homebrew, and backups (see original PSP).   But I don't think that cracking the console is what will win the Console War.

Great post until the end of the first paragraph.

You guys have taken THIS way too serious. By console war, Im just stating how you think will win in terms of userbase.....Its obvious the first tablet wars were dominated by Apple but nowadays you can pretty much say Android has beat or at leasted evened it out.

There is nothing wrong with that.

The Xbox 360, like Xbox 1, has homebrew options to enable homebrew mode and disable it so methods of detection have been able to be bypassed :)

Hello,

Beat me to it. By that logic, the Dreamcast won the console wars of its generation.

The problem with Dreamcast and PS2 is that noone was really behind the Dreamcast except Sega. Most were pushing their cards with Xbox and the PS2. The Gamecube "survived" because it had Nintendo's first party backing. The Dreamcast really had nothing else to offer except Sonic. It always was the only console at the time that did not ship with a DVD drive. That and a lot more Sega related decisions, some which were "ahead of its time", really runied it for Sega/Dreamcast.

Don't you mean "who thinks the console which is easier to pirate games for will win the console war?"

I agree with AB: a small but vocal group of people care about home brew, everyone else couldn't care less.

I said consoles that run homebrew/backup games/etc. Strictly that.
