  1. 1. Do you think that the consoles war is won by the first that can run homebrew/backup games/etc?

Hello,

I said consoles that run homebrew/backup games/etc. Strictly that.

I'd argue that a lot of people who advocate for homebrew and backups are motivated by piracy more often than not.

Nothing like modding your X1/PS4 in order to have all that power at your disposal so that you can run an homebrewed RPG that could've easily been reproduced with the exact same quality with the computing power of a SNES.

The Wii "won" the last generation (in numbers at least) because it was extremely easy to pirate games for it. Same with the DS. You can keep dancing around the subject but one of the first things that came out after geohot released the encryption key was an utility that let you run games from an external HDD, regardless of if you had made that "backup" yourself.

I bet that in the PS1 days, soldering iron sales also went trough the roof :shifty:

People are too invested in online features now to care about/risk piracy, and methods of detection are infinitely superior to PS1/XB1/PS2 days.

Ahh. The PS1 days. Everyone I knew who owned a PS1 had it modded and had a library of pirated games. I cannot recall a single person who didn't take their console to a market or shop to have it modded.

Nope. The price points on all consoles are to hight to even think about doing something warranty voiding. Not to mention those that actual homebrew are in the minority.

I think if people could still play online and have a modded system they would. Firmware updates and online checks have killed a lot of piracy. Unless you want to buy one console to mod and another to play online, which I think some people do.

But even then, if you pirate a game you like and want to go online with, you'll have to go out and purchase a legit copy.

Attributing Wii's success to homebrew is backwards.  Wii was successful before the homebrew appeared.  The hombrew came out just because it turned out it was easy to do.

What I think will be a win this time around are the apps available.  If it's true that the Xbox will be able to run certain Win8 apps I think you'll get a lot of cool apps available that will let you really expand on the system.

My daughter enjoyed her Wii from day one, homebrew didn't enter into it at the time... granted, that experience got a lot better after I was able to add an external drive to get rid of the discs.  And yea Warwagon, it's absurdly easy to do, pretty much a no brainer.

Will it make people choose one console over another? No

Will it sell consoles based purely on how easy it is to do? Yes.

Dreamcasts, PS2s with swap tops, and original XBoxes are still prevalent today. I'm convinced the only reason people even bought the PSP was for homebrew. Hell, you wouldn't have so many banned XBox 360's if not for homebrew either.

Heh only reason I picked up a few used original XBox's was for homebrew, specifically XBMC, don't think any games were ever played on any of them.

I guess Ouya must be flying off the shelves then huh?

Seriously. It's a tiny minority of overall consumers that care/partake in console modding/hacking. It isn't enough to influence sales numbers either way.
