Cheap upgrade from Radeon 6670

Recommended Posts

There are so many model graphics cards, I'm overwhelmed. What would you recommend as cheap step up from the Radeon 6670 I am using?

I don't play that many current day games, but I'm looking something that will handle more slightly newer games.

A10-5800K + any FM2+ mainboard you like. Oops, excuse me, not cheap.

But very futureproof. You can later sell Trinity for a reasonable sum, get (or wait now for) Kaveri APU, in time get even better graphics card that still supports dual graphics, and possibly up your RAM speeds. It'll last many years.

If you have no PCI-E connector on your PSU, the fastest you can get is an HD 7750 (avoid the DDR3 model: take the GDDR5!). Otherwise try to find good deals on HD 7770s or HD 7790s; they are being sold at discount prices to make way for the new R7 260X and offer basically the same amount of power.

Just jump up the tiers until you reach a price point you're comfortable with.

In HD 6000 series terms, it's somewhere between an HD 6850 and an HD 6870, so it's around 2-2.5 times* faster than your current card. You can look at old benchmarks of the 6670 vs these cards to get an idea of the increase in performance. It's not going to rock your world at 1080p 60fps with everything maxed out, but if you can tolerate medium-to-high settings with not much AA, for instance, it's still a capable card. I'm using an HD 7750 for my living room PC and it's great in games like Civ 5, Grid 2 and Dark Souls.

I would not personally get anything slower than a GTX 650 Ti Boost if you have the available PCI-E connector (which you do if you're getting an HD 7770), but that's about 150$, so it's not exactly cheap.

*in terms of framerate at the same settings

HD 7790 for 70$ (90$ - 20$ mailing rebate) on newegg.com now! You even get a free game and free shipping. As I said, these are getting sold out quickly at bargain prices, so it's now or never if you're looking for a card under 100$.
