Winaero Charms Bar Killer: get rid of Charms Bar in Windows 8.1/Windows 8 completely

Recommended Posts

Well, a new one is here.

Winaero Charms Bar Killer

This little tiny app (the native one, not .NET) allows you to get rid of Charms Bar in Windows 8.1/Windows 8 completely.

You probably noticed new features which allow you to disable top left corner, top right corner and skip Start screen to boot directly to Desktop. Those options are accessible inside properties of the taskbar. However, you cannot disable the right bottom corner. It always show you the charms bar!

Winaero Charms Bar Killer can kill the top left corner, the top right corner and the bottom right corner in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8. This can be handy for Windows 8 users too, since they do not have options to disable those active corners. Use the tray icon to change application options and behavior.

You can change the following settings:

  • Run at startup - will run the application every time Windows starts.
  • Hide tray icon - will hide the tray icon of application. The application will remember this setting and will not show the tray icon even when you restart it. To show it again, run Winaero Charms Bar Killer once again.
  • Kill Charms Bar - will disable the top right corner and the bottom right corner in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.
  • Kill Top Left Corner - will disable the top left corner (switcher).
Please note!

After you have disabled these active corners, exit the application and restart the Explorer shell to get them back!

Freeware, portable.

Windows 8's UI is so inconsistent and hectic, I am on the tipping point of going back to Windows 7, which I might do today.

For convenience of shutting your PC down, I strongly disagree.

With the start menu, you click the start button and hit shut down (two steps). With the charms bar, you have to go to the upper right corner, click settings, click power, and then click shut down (4 steps).  The power menu in Windows 8, you right click on the start button, hover over the shutdown or sign out and click shutdown or restart (2 1/2 steps).

Hmm... nice app. The Charms bar is one of the more annoying of the Windows 8 features. I'm about to reformat and set my main pc/htpc back up again and I'm thinking I'm going Windows 7, but with all these great apps I'm considering Windows 8 and just converting it to be the same as Windows 7.

Choice is good, but some of you seem like you would be happy with Win 95 level OS features, you insist on not using the available better options to it's fullest just bacuse it doesn't conform to your chose style of work and ignoring the efficiency of the newer stuff for ignorant reasons, like whining about how many steps it takes top reboot the rare time you need to do so

Not wanting something that was clearly designed for touch tablets and phones doesn't mean one wants Windows 95 level features, whatever that means.

Personally I don't find the charms bar to offer any advantages nor do I see anything modern or efficient about it. To me it's a step down in usability.

I'm using Win 8.1 on a desktop PC and I find all the features in Win 8 useful at some point of the day, just because YOU don't like them doesn't mean they are useless,  and making ridiculos claims like it was made for touch only is retarded, MS might be badly managed, but even they are not stupid, I'm not saying choice isn't good, but people like you are just hating on nice features for no valid reason

Some Windows 8 design inconsistencies that bother me is that volume and battery open in a traditional style and when you click on wifi network icon, it opens a modern UI side panel.

I was clearly stating my opinion, and I didn't say they were useless. I said I don't find them useful and for me they offer less usability than what we had before them. Just as you say you like them and call them nice features, that is also your opinion. It doesn't mean everyone has to share it nor does it make it a fact. I also fail to see why you are being so aggressive about it; do you really take it personally that someone doesn't like the same OS features as you?

How dare you question the mighty MS on Neowin. :laugh

And just because you like them, doesn't make them useful to everyone else. Him and I and the rest of the millions of people who don't like Windows 8 are "hating on nice features" because WE DON'T LIKE THEM, that's reason enough. Get over yourself. I'm really tired of hearing the whining whenever someone says they don't like Windows 8. This is quite obviously a thread for an application that removes functionality that some of you consider sacred. Don't read it if you're going to get offended by someone not worshiping Windows 8.

Apparently this software is lime approved. On a more serious note, the context menu seems to glitch up sometimes. :/

I am looking for way to defeat this. Eww, very annoying bug.

I hope it is ok to use the lime :)

  • 6 months later...

It was downloaded right from them, go to their website, you will see a large green download button, that is "NOT" the download rather it is from an advertiser.

Click on the light grey tab that is the download direct from Winaero for cbk.

Can we start banning links to sites that accept ads for fake/misleading downloads?  Seems like Trying To Get a Hopefully Useful Utility should not be a vector for malware.
