I don't know about anyone else but my phone support experience with Windows 8 / 8.1 has not been good. Especially with older individuals. Most still have no clue where the windows key is on their keyboard. Trying to explain to them how to activate the charms bar, is a feat all its own. Usually I just give up and tell them to press windows key + C but first I have to explain to them were the windows key is located.

 

What is everyone elses Windows 8 / 8.1 phone support experience?

 

Also, has anyone else noticed that nobody is upgrading to windows 8.1 on their own? Every windows 8 machine I log into have not upgraded to 8.1 the only ones that have are the ones i've done for them.

 

Does it prompt them to upgrade? Or do they have to go into the windows store and click the 8.1 icon? On a few machines i've had to do a wsreset just for Windows 8.1 to show up.

We're still moving people to Win7 at work, I have had very few people call in with Win8, the "transition" from XP to 7 is already too much for some, I will hopefully be off phone support when they roll out Win 8, which is in internal testing already

And here I thought you meant calling Microsoft up when your Windows 8 upgrade doesn't work properly, or the "Refresh" feature leaves you without a usable PC and your CD key no longer works...

 

Microsoft support is a nightmare ;)

 

I don't do tech support for individuals, and my business customers are all on 7 for the foreseeable future, thankfully. I think by the time they upgrade to 9, the transition will be easier.

Try telling them to press the "Flag" key at the bottom of their keyboard between Ctrl and Alt instead of the "Windows" key.

For the people that voted Easier than previous versions of windows could someone explain to me how it's easier.

 

I believe some machines need some windows updates before Windows 8.1 shows up in the store.

 

As far as supporting people, i find that everyone i upgraded to 8 has figured it out for themselves.  They understand the settings page more than the control panel - so on and so forth.

I don't do end-user support anymore, just clients, but I've occasionally had to point a few things out to them.. nothing really difficult but no more so than previous versions, once they knew the new stuff they went about their daily routine as usual.  They're typically not the type that needs everything and anything spoon-fed to them and freaks out when an icon moves elsewhere though.  Can't say I've seen the "nobody's upgrade on their own" though, had a few clients/friends do that themselves with no serious catastrophes, although a number of them didn't know or care either.  (IE, as long as they could do their work they didn't care.)  Dealing with the everyday home user is probably tougher I would think though, I've had to deal with some seriously clueless people back when I did that, don't miss it.

 

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone being surprised about the presence of a Windows key on their keyboard since the late 90's though, it's pretty much on every keyboard on the planet except for the ones made by Apple. No more difficult to find than, well, any of the others.

Windows 8 has not affected end user intelligence; the support situation remains largely the same - people able to work their way through things still do so, while the helpless/clueless users are still helpless/clueless.

It's getting more and more frustrating doing phone support for Windows 8 (The part I walk them through over the phone so I can remotely connect to them) as more and more people keep referring to the home screen as "The Desktop"
