"Xbox On" - Not working, but other commands do

Recommended Posts

The hand commands half work for me, like I can grab a screen and move it side to side, but at the same time me moving my hand slightly can select items when I don't want it to.

Xbox On works about 20% of the time for me.  Other voice commands work fine as long as I dont have any TV show or game audio playing.  If I do, I have to mute the audio before I say the commands.  Not sure why Xbox on is so inconsistent for me though.

Mine's set to Australia and "Xbox On' has never worked for me.Then again, most voice commands don't, "Xbox turn off" is the only reliable one (Which is hilarious)

IIRC, Australia will be getting "Xbox on" later in 2014.

I found "xbox on" works for me most of the time but I have to say it pretty loud.. Usually it works on the 2nd-3rd try consistantly..

My biggest complaint right now is, this auto login feature.. I thought I would LOVE it, and I do....when I am alone, but when my kids come in the room or I walk in on them it sometimes takes us all the way back to the main menu when in a game because it says "it detected a new person and logs them in"..... man that is really annoying. \

That's weird, for me that only happens if I actually hand the controller to another player in KI, which is a neat thing to see happen automatically by the way, since it swaps user profiles for the game on the fly.

I haven't had it do that when another user just walks by.

"XBox On" has actually been the most consistent Kinect 2 feature for me. About the only one tbh, but it works 99% of the time.

Not just for me either, for anyone who tries it (meaning Wife, Family, Etc.).

Just interesting reading about all of the different experiences people seem to be having with the One itself.

Consistency is not a word that will be tossed around when discussing the One it seems, at least not for quite some time.

The hard part is figuring out why its inconsistent. I think there is a software/hardware issue at play here. Some people in this very thread have experienced better results after replacing Kinect or the X1 itself and Xbox support has even hinted at the problem being in hardware or software and requiring the replacement.

I this makes it all the more clear why MS delayed launching in more than 13 regions. The whole voice command system requires a lot of tuning to get right and make it consistent for all users. Even these 13 regions don't have access to all voice features since only a handful actually got support for 'Xbox On' at launch.

I guess its just not very easy to make it work great for everyone thanks to our varied speech patterns, dialects, and varied environments.

"Xbox on" has worked pretty consistently for me. The voice commands, in general, have worked much better than I was anticipating after watching some of the launch videos. Though I'm from Connecticut, so I would assume my accent, if I even have one, is a typical American accent.

I especially like the fact that the Xbox responds to both "Xbox" and "Xbone". I guess "Xbone" is an appropriate short-hand name for the console after all.

'Xbo' works for me as well

I am thinking about making that DIY kinect mount.. Mine is only about  1 1/2 feet off the ground or so on my tv stand in the game room... If I put it up on the TV that would be about 5 feet up in the air.. Would that be better for it?

Tape it up there and test it before you make the stand.

Just do what the manual recommends.

Here is what I got, and it works - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/kinect-sensor-kit-for-xbox-one/1838482.p?id=1219065985770&skuId=1838482&st=xbox%20one%20kinect&cp=1&lp=1

Also an update, "Xbox on" seems to work MUCH better with the replacement system I got.

so I made the DIY stand and it worked.. Pretty well actually, but then a friend of mine come over for our Christmas get together tonight and said dude.... I will be right back.. He ran home and got his stand for his old Kinect 1, which worked flawlessly.. It even clicked into place between the new Kinects stand to hold it in place.

I've given up with Xbox On in my accent, it just will not ever work. I need to effectively shout it in a faux american accent to get it going at about 30% success rate. It's easier to just walk over to the console. Most other commands work fine

I wonder if your region is simply not complete yet as far as supporting the Xbox On command. On MS' support page, it clearly says that while the general voice commands are supported in all 13 regions, the Xbox On command is not.

The info I found says that at launch, the Xbox On command is only officially supported in the following regions:

United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Germany

The rest will be updated with proper support as soon as possible after launch. So that seems to clearly point to Australia not having official support for the 'Xbox On' command. So the fact that you get it to work at all says something. That also means that its not a hardware problem for you. Its literally a software issue that will be patched.

I should have clarified I'm currently in the UK and bought it here

Well that changes everything

So then it comes down to your accent I would guess. We do know that there are some hardware issues floating around that make the command difficult to near impossible to use, so you could talk to Xbox support and get their take on it.

If its not a technical issue, than maybe UK support does not offer proper support for your accent, hence why you get it to work a little bit when you try to force another accent.

  • 2 months later...

Sorry for the noob questions. I got up this morning and noticed that my One was dark and I thought it still glowed in standby mode. I said "xbox on" at various volumes and it wouldn't come on. I had to press the xbox button on my controller then my zone, Directv, and av receiver came on. And the One is plugged in separately, not into the receiver's power input. After a certain length of inactivity does it turn completely off and voice won't given turn it on?
