web Americans and Europeans Map Each Other (and fail horribly)

I never knew the difference of UK, Great Britain, Britain or England. I always assume they were the same but names from different periods of time. So I Binged and now know the difference and how the names came about. Here is a link I used to learn for those interested.

technically a state is now no different then a country in the EU... they are technically a "State" encapsulated in a larger nation.....

I'm actually better at filling in a map of the US than I am Europe *ahem*.

 

My Geography is shocking, the only reason I know the US is because my company does a lot of business there and I must split leads between West/East for our San Fran/NYC offices.

Not really. The EU is still a confederacy with a lot more autonomy granted to member states versus American states. The US leans more towards a federal model with, in theory, powers almost equally split between states and the fed. Of course, this was after you guys concluded a confederacy wasn't going to work out :p

 

As for naming counties in the state or in the UK, hell I can't even name all the counties and regions in my province except for the ones immediately surrounding Toronto.

I'll hold my hands up. I couldn't map out the states of America, i couldn't map out the countries of Europe, i couldn't even map out the counties in England, Scotland or Wales.

 

Does this make me a bad person? No. Does it mean i have shocking Geography? No. Although i do have shocking geography. :p

A few days ago some people were all in huff about Harvard students not knowing the capital of Canada.

 

The only time geography like this actually means anything is locally. If you grew up in Canada and don't know the capital, that's pretty bad. Otherwise, geography is nothing but trivia, because it's utterly trivial. Some might argue that knowing geography shows a level of awareness, and maybe that's true to a small degree. Still, there are much more important things to know.

 

Einstein always wrote down addresses and phone numbers, because he said they weren't worth the amount of finite memory they take up. He had better things to keep in his memory, and when he needed to know an address or a phone number, he could just look them up.

 

I think a lot of the emphasis put on knowing geography comes from the so-called "whiz kids" on late night talk shows that can name every state, state capital, every state bird, etc.. That has nothing to do with being "smart" though. It just shows a good memory, which young children excel at.
