benplace
I am considering getting a PS4 for the family for xmas. We have a PS3 and I constantly use it as my media center. I copy movies and tv shows to a usb stick (AVI and MKV converted using PS3Muxer) and plug it in and watch what I want. I just want to make sure I can still do this on the PS4. Are there any added capabilities such as NTFS or direct MKV support? Maybe streaming from an SMB share capabilities? Anyone with a system that can answer these questions I appreciate it in advance! I did google but all the hits were about Netflix and hulu stuff.
Brandon H Supervisor Posted November 27, 2013 Supervisor Share Posted November 27, 2013 no streaming from a home server as of right now no added capabilities of which you speak haven't heard if you can actually play media from usb yet and there have been issues playing blurays and dvds I'd stay away from the PS4 for now if you want it as a media center The Evil Overlord, SecretAgentMan and Thief000 3 Share

+Warwagon MVC Posted November 27, 2013 MVC Share Posted November 27, 2013 I know this is a PS4 question but If local media playback off a hard drive or USB stick with NTFS support is what you are looking for I can highly recommend this It plays Xvid Mp4 MOV AVI MKV https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1177481-sony-bdp-s3100-swiss-army-knife-of-video-formats/

trooper11
Wait, so you cant even play divx and m2ts files from a fat32 formatted usb stick???? Can someone verify this? I can verify this. The ps4 currently does not support any external storage via USB and that includes playing any media files from them. Since it also does not have dlna support, you can't even stream from another PC. The system also explicitly does not support MP3 playback. Right now, the ps4 is not the system to get if media playback is important to you. Deihmos
Install Mediabrowser 3 server or Plex and play the videos in the web browser. The Evil Overlord
right, but theres been no indication that it will be either.I just believe there'll be too much pressure on them to add or re add w/e, those features. As a very loyal playstation consumer, I'd want my next gen to have even better media server capabilities than the current gen did. Otherwise, the exclusives aren't enough for me to stay with sony. (But then I am going down another path for my personal media server needs. Something I wouldn't have considered if the last update hadn't borked my personal media infrastructure build) vcfan and Aergan 2 Share
+Eternal Tempest MVC Posted November 27, 2013 MVC Share Posted November 27, 2013 PS4 will be adding DLNA and MP3 support in future update. The hard drive in the PS4 can be upgraded (use standard laptop 2.5 hard drive). Since the PS4 already supports some external storage, such as using usb drive for game save backup. In terms to adding space to the install games to, etc. I don't know.

Even mp3 playback and DLNA was such a non priority to them that it took bad press during launch for them to cave in and promise to support it in a future update. all im saying is, if youre hoping for a good multimedia experience, things don't sound very encouraging. External drives are only being used for manual updates at the moment. Sony has made no claim to be adding proper external support yet.
Atomic Wanderer Chicken
Its pretty mind boggling that the ps3s successor would be missing multimedia functionalities that the ps3 had. One step back in multimedia, one large jump forward in gaming. The previous head of Playstation division was about 1 box in your entertainment system to do it all. He was there from Playstation 1, 2, and 3. After the PS3 launch fiasco, he semi-retired and Kaz (now CEO of all of Sony) took over. Not sure who's currently in charge over Playstation, however, I think sony went with a game focus first, multi-media 2nd. I do see the irony in the switch MS is not trying to be the one box in your entertainment center and PS4 was designed as a game console 1st role switch. It might be in reaction to how difficult Sony had trying to advertise the PS3, and the confusion if it's a game console vs blu-ray player it caused. Sony didn't get the marketing right at first / launch.
Atomic Wanderer Chicken
The one thing that had me scratching my head was not being able to play music cds. Every PlayStation since the first one could play back music cds. Something tells me they were rushing to get the ps4 out to release.

I'll have to check that out tonight, have not tried it yet. The PS4 file system on a usb drive looks to be the same or similar as PS3. Example, PS3 offline system update had to be in a folder labeled Drive PS3\UPDATE\UPDATEFILE.PUP Drive PS4\UPDATE\UPDATEFILE.PUP Here's the PS3 Folder Structure for reference http://ps3explained.com/advanced/folder-structure/

External drives are only useful for updates. That could change later of course, but Sony has made no mention of when that might change. So out of curiosity is the Xbox one able to do this? (I know its a PS4 forum but through reading this other people will want to know) The X1 does support dlna, which means it does support streaming from another PC or device. It does support audio cd playback. It does not support external storage yet either. Unlike Sony, MS has said that full external support is coming soon, including support for local file playback of mp3s and some video files. Both consoles were rushed a bit to release now. You will see both evolve and improve software wise. Right now, the X1 has the edge for multimedia uses and has more promised support to come. So again, if these things matter to you, those are the facts. Brandon H 1 Share
firey
So out of curiosity is the Xbox one able to do this? (I know its a PS4 forum but through reading this other people will want to know) Sort of. It has Streaming and such.. but no playing off an attached USB Device. There have been rumors that Dec 15th will be the launch of the next PS4 update.. no word yet on validity or features.. though sony has confirmed MP3/DLNA support coming. Which aside from CD Playback would put it at the same level as the XBone for media (at this point). If you wanted something for MEDIA I would keep the PS3, or get something like the raspberry pi. If your wanting a game console that has media features more similar to the ps3 or 360, then that would be the X1 right now. If your waiting on a console until early next year, well then just wait and see what updates both consoles have gotten by then. The X1 could have full external support and the ps4 could have dlna and MP3 support. SecretAgentMan and BajiRav 2 Share

Aergan
I get the impression that Microsoft and Sony are both shunning the ability to use their devices as complete media solutions for content you possess in favour of subscription models (be in cloud like Netflix/Spotify/Lastfm/Xbox Music or HDMI pass through to your cable/satellite operation for the Xbox One). On that wonderfully positive note, got to love HTPC solutions these days!
