Pizza Hut boss out after refusing to open on Thanksgiving

The manager of an Indiana Pizza Hut claims he was fired for refusing to open the restaurant on Thanksgiving.

Tony Rohr, who worked his way up from cook to manager at the restaurant, in Elkhart, Ind., over 10 years, said the company that owns the store dictated it be open for the holiday, and he refused.

"I said, 'Why can't we be the company that stands up and says we care about our employees and they can have the day off,?'" Rohr told WSBT 22. "Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only two days that they're closed in the whole year and they're the only two days that those people are guaranteed to have off to spend with their families.?

A Pizza Hut rep told the station that the decision to remain open on Thanksgiving wasn't up to Rohr, and that it came from the corporate level.

Rohr wrote a letter venting his frustrations, saying: "I do not resign. However, I accept that the refusal to comply with this greedy, immoral request means the end of my tenure with this company." He added, "I hope you realize that it is the people at the bottom of the totem pole that make your life possible."

Later, the station got in touch with the director of operations for the local chain and he told the news station that Rohr did not get fired, but rather, he quit.

Update on Elkhart, IN: we feel strongly that the situation involving our independent franchisee and the local store manager could and should have been avoided. We fully respect an employee?s right to not work on a holiday, which is why the vast majority of Pizza Huts in America are closed on Thanksgiving. As a result, we strongly recommended that the local franchisee reinstate the store manager and they have agreed.

As much as I am against the major department/electronic stores opening on Thanksgiving, only to display that corporate greed overrides employee respect....

 

Pizza Hut is a restaurant, which delivers.  Despite it being a major feasting day, many people will not want to cook more than the large, holiday dinner.  And, with many sports being aired during this day, people don't want to run around to grab some lunch and miss the games.  It only makes sense that they be open.  Just like it makes sense that a gas station would be open.

 

That said, if the Pizza Hut big wigs are putting their employees to work, then I would expect them to be at work as well.  But we all know that won't happen.

I worked for Pizza Hut as a delivery driver for over 3 years. The regional managers had no clue what was going on in the stores, and they were total a***oles. It was the only job I was ever fired from, and it was because I refused to break a safety rule. 

 

The operator knew he hadn't quit, and that he was being a d**k for firing him.

 

Pizza Hut management are total D-Bags :)

Pizza Hut clearly doesn't understand the concept of people spending time and being with families on holidays. In Pizza Hut's mind, they care much more about money and making pizza and not family.  This also applies to all the other ignorant companies holding their employees hostage to have killer deals on Thanksgiving too!  

 

There needs to be laws against employers forcing employees to work on Thanksgiving, its not right!

Give me a break! No, there doesn't. Unless Pizza Hut is literally enslaving their employees, people who work there can choose to abide by company policy or find a job elsewhere. Simple as that. And, according to this article, Mr. Rohr plans on doing just that.

So enough of the stomping of the feet. People need to grow up instead of whining every time they don't get their way. If you want holidays off, work at a company that isn't open on holidays or start your own business.

A CT representative wants a law to prevent stores from opening on thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is about being and spending time with family, which is clearly a concept  retailers don't understand.

Why is it a sham holiday ?  No one forces you to observe Thanksgiving. You don't need to go to a church, pray, or cook a fancy dinner.
