If you're looking for a freebie, Handbrake's pretty good.. not quite that simplistic but not hard either.. usually it's just a matter of picking a source file, telling it where you want to put it, pick a format, and then press the start button.. although there's a lot of options to play with if you need too.  Runs on all operating systems.  If you're comfortable tinkering with your system you could always create context menu entries for it as well and automate it a tad, not sure if there's any pre-made solution out there for that already, wouldn't surprise me if there is though.

When I was converting formats, I was using Handbrake. I have no idea about the system resources (although converting in itself will use quite a lot), and as I haven't used it for several years I don't know if there is some form of context menu for it, but back in the day it was one of the recommended softwares to use.

EDIT: Max Norris beat me to it. I guess that's two votes for Handbrake then.

You could use the HandBrake command line version to create your own tool. At its simplest something like:

HandBrakeCLI.exe --input "path/to/input/file.wmv" --output "path/to/output/file.avi"

Add it to the context menu for the .wmv file extension.

You do know that such a search usually turns up crapware? "FREE to download, but to convert pay $$$"

my wmv file size is  9.3 MB.

I want to convert this to a low sized file  and then will send via email ......so that my user can open in windows media player.

I think  avi will compress a bit and can be played in windows media player.

Just a suggestion, email isn't very reliable or practical when it comes to sending larger files like that, never mind additional overhead due to MIME encoding which can be as much as ~33%. May want to consider storing it elsewhere (DropBox, SkyDrive, etc) and mailing the link instead.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that .avi files offer less compression than .wmv, so you wouldn't want to do that. But as Max Norris said, you'll probably be better off uploading the file to a cloud storage system like Dropbox or Google drive and then sending your friend the link.

Since when does handbrake convert to avi anyway? It can convert from avi to mp4/mkv -- but it no longer supports the avi container.. That was pulled in like version 9.4 back end of 2009 I believe.

As mentioned already - avi would not be the format of choice to be honest, its an OLD container!!

As to size, that is not really a function of the container used, but the settings used when converting or creating the file. Resolution, Framerate, audio quality, etc.

Passing video in email is not a very good idea, normally they are larger in size and just not well suited for sending in email. And as mentioned sending in email is going to just make it bigger because of the encoding to send it in email.

As mentioned any of the cloud storage companies out there is better suited for this sort of thing. Most of them give you FREE space in the Gigs to work with, so 10MB is nothing.

It is really as simple as installing dropbox, putting your file you want to share in your dropbox and then right clicking it to get a share link.

This will be now in your clipboard and you can paste this link into email or chat software and they can just go to the link to watch the video/see the pictures of say a whole folder you shared in a gallery or download say the video

Here is example of my gd in her butterfly costume on Halloween... Blurred out some stuff for privacy, etc..

I use dropbox, but pretty much any of the cloud storage services should provide such features, box, spideroak, ubuntu one, etc. etc..

Avidemux is the simplest one to use imo.

BTW AVI is a container. It contains video data, audio data and maybe text data like subtitles and such. Changing the container from ASF (most of the time used for WMV compression with the WMV extension) to AVI wont have any effect if you don't change the compression format.

Comparison of container formats

Windows Media Video

What you are looking to do is change the compression format likely to h264 into a mp4 container.

Hello,

The website is horrendous.

+1

The first time I used it, I acutally ran malware and my antivirus. It just looks like a pool of malware but it seems to be germ free.

Either use Handbrake like others suggested or you could try Super. The name and website are horrendous, but the quality it outputs is quite nice imho. And it's free.

Why do people keep suggesting Handbrake for this? It neither supports WMV as an input, nor does it output AVI. It outputs H.264 as MP4 or MKV only.

Host it as a private file on the likes of youtube and share a link or as already suggested load it into the cloud and post links as it only s small file size.

"Handbrake can process most common multimedia files and any DVD or BluRay sources that do not contain any kind of copy protection." I really thought it supported WMV, been a while since I've used it. But I know for a fact Super supports it, hence the "or you could try..."

Best thing to be honest would be to use ffmpeg - you'll need to learn how to configure it but it'll do a pretty good job.
