Microsoft ready to kill Windws RT

Recommended Posts

Microsoft looks ready to kill off Windows RT, its version of Windows devised for chips based on ARM's architecture, judging by remarks by senior executive Julie Larson-Green.

Larson-Green, who is executive vice-president of Devices and Studios at Microsoft, said that the aim of Windows RT was "our first go at creating that more closed, turnkey experience [that Apple has on the iPad]?" but that Microsoft now has three mobile operating systems: "We have the Windows Phone OS. We have Windows RT and we have full Windows. We're not going to have three."

Her comments, made at a UBS seminar, appear to confirm the growing suspicions that Windows RT has been a failure both with OEMs PC makers and developers, who have all but abandoned it. Only Microsoft and Nokia's handset division, which is being acquired by Microsoft, make any RT devices. Microsoft had to write down $900m at the end of the June quarter on unsold Surface RT devices.

Also is this guy brain dead?

Richard Windsor, who runs the Radio Free Mobile consultancy, commented: "I have long suspected which is that Windows RT will be killed off sooner rather than later. Always one to treat hot potatoes delicately, Microsoft has not explicitly said that RT will be terminated but has made it very clear that there will not be three operating systems. Windows RT is an orphan child that sits between Windows 8 and Windows Phone and is neither fish nor fowl. Hence the devices that are based on it are underpowered with hideously limited functionality on the desktop making them inferior to both Android and iOS tablets."

So much wrong in one sentence. Well done Richard.

Killing isn't what's going to happen.  Merging WP and Windows RT is one thing, maybe dropping the RT name, think it'd be best to bring back Windows Mobile for all things phone+tablet going forward when they do become one.  Though WP is growing so I don't know if it'll be wise to change the brand for it.  They could keep it and just unify the Store so it doesn't matter either way.

It's not like they are killing off Windows RT, they are merging Windows Phone and Windows RT into one.

And it makes sense to do that now. WP is running on the same NT kernel already anyway.

1. they're not "killing" Windows RT

2. this isn't new news.

MS has been hinting for a long while now that they've been planning to merge RT & WP

WinRT may die in its current form but only because Microsoft will likely merge it with WP8. It'll be similar to what happened to Android 2.3 and 3.0. Google merged a tablet and smartphone OS to create Android 4.0.

I think Windows RT's (not WinRT) code will be merged with Windows Phone 8 like Android is on tablets and smartphones and all apps will across both. Hopefully Microsoft will chip away at Modern UI on Windows 8 once Windows RT and Phone become unified.

I would have possibly believed the article until Surface 2 was released & I believe RT had a slow start but now with them being carried in stores like Walmart along with deals like $199 for a 32gb model and finally the big push in advertising during the holiday shopping season. I can see Windows Phone being merged in RT in the future.

I also think they will merge Windows RT and Windows Phone.

Got to tell you guys, the Surfaces are selling pretty damn well in Australia O.o

I don't see Surface support getting dropped anytime soon.

Hope they kill that version.

And I hope they DO NOT go with 1 OS for 3 devices. if they do that, they will be killed by their self. Why?

Imagine that, just imagine and you will see how surreal it is.

Spoken like a true luddite.

Linux, in particular Ubuntu is an operating system that runs on phones, tablets, desktops and servers. It's entirely possible and not particular hard to imagine.

Just needs less idiots running around not understanding what they are talking about tbh.

My friend, I think you are not a developer and you do not what you are talking about.

I think I am a developer, and I absolutely do know what I'm talking about.

Windows Phone is based on NT, and the only thing stopping RT from running custom apps is cross compiling and Microsoft flicking the switch to allow it.

Microsoft are more than capable of setting up Windows to compile on run or on install to overcome these issues.

Even if that weren't the case, it is still entirely IMAGINABLE.

I don't think they plan on literally one OS (NT 6x aside). There will be Windows 8/9 (with desktop and RT) and Windows Phone.

They've already merged the developer accounts for Windows 8 and Windows Phone. They're most likely going to merge the stores and probably the WinRT/WinPRT APIs.

It will essentially be one OS, because apps released for Windows Phone will also be compatible with Windows 8/9, and vice versa (as far as Modern UI apps).

It should be, though. You should be able to run full Office off your phone (if connected to an external monitor).

It's almost there. It just needs a little tweaking. The result would be amazing.

thanks for informing me... my mom sold her house after my dad passed away and she sent the funds so she could get my daughter a surfaceRT.. then just to bork it right off...quite lame for them to develop an OS only to later kill it. but that's MS.. they make some RELLY,REALLY good decisons and some REALLY,REALLY bone headed decisions

One thing is for sure all this speculation isn't going to help in giving motivation to deveopers and publishers to create new apps for RT and could lead to an even faster demise for the beleaguered OS.

one options is as stated before, they COULD allow for a swap process of switching out the RT Os on surface RT tablets and run the full blown OS on surface RT. with the hardware of the RT tablets, I'm more than sure it could run it.It would allow my daughter to run desktop apps too.

WP and Windows RT will become one BUT Windows and Windows RT will also become one. At some point MS will just decide there's not point in differentiating Windows and RT just because of the platform and both will just be Windows. Ether this will fully unlock desktop/x86 emulation at this point or if they'll just let the desktop be for desktop and remove it on tablets is another thing.
