Comparing next-gen games: screenshots from the Xbox One, PS4, and more

Recommended Posts

For our feature comparing next gen games, we spent a lot of time testing ? playing through graphically-challenging scenes, collecting screenshots and video clips, carefully examining graphics and shaders, watching for framerate drops, and having precious little fun. Here, you can find a complete collection of matched screenshots that you can use to compare various platforms to each other, plus full resolution images.

We've examined six different multi-platform games across four different consoles, plus an extra game exclusive to each platform. That makes for ten discrete titles and a grand total of 29 discs we've slotted into various consoles. We did our best to match what most gamers will see: that means we left brightness settings at their default levels and didn't alter the final screenshots (though some image compression is inevitable when publishing to the web). The images comparing the two next-gen consoles have been cropped to the full width of the webpage to allow you to see individual scenes unscaled. We've also included the full-resolution files from each platform as individual links. Enjoy the fruits of our labors below (you can slide the divider on each image to compare), and read all the analysis in our full piece.

COD and BF4 look slightly clearer on the PS4 compared to the Xbox One.

Assassins Creed looks slightly clearer on the PS4 compared to the Xbox One.

Maden 25 looks slightly clearer on the xbox One compared to the PS4.

Fifa and 2K14 look the same to me on the Xbox One and PS4.

The jump in graphics between the xbox 360 to xbox one and ps3 to ps4 isn't big as I imagined!

Actually there are a lot of details that have changed, such as lightning and shadows.

And, we haven't seen all the power of the consoles yet ;)

Its not nearly as big as the jump from the PS1 to PS2 for instance or from the ps2 to ps3. The PS4 and Xbox One do look considerably improved so far from their predecessors, and yes they will need time to take full advantage of the consoles power!

Assassins Creed is one of those games that appears on both gen consoles at the same time, but the next-gen version just has higher-res textures and not much else etc. Happens every generation.

There really haven't been any tech innovations that can compare to leaps from 10 or 20 years ago. We're in an incremental stage where graphics/processing will only grow by small amounts unless somebody discovers or invents something new.

Not only are graphics advancing slower now but you have to keep in mind that these early games are also on the older consoles so the differences between old and new aren't going to be as big yet.  In a year from now when games start to be XB1 or PS4 only then we'll see more of a difference compared to the 360/PS3 days.

Why are the Xbox One photos grainy when compared with the PS4. Ghosts is the most evident and both of them should be running at 720P.

The Xbox 360 looks better in Ghosts than the xbox one in the vs ps4 comparison.

It's The Verge ;)

The upscaler on the One over sharpens and crushes some blacks. Force the One to run in 720p and the sharpening issue goes away.

I thought it was disabled on the final build of BF4 because it was causing worse aliasing on further away finer details?

Most cases the PS4 looks better than the XB1 I think, not by much but just slightly. However it's still too early for the generation comparisons, give it a year or so and I think we will truly see a difference.

there is no sharpen filter. thats BS. it has to do with gamma levels. BF4 adjusted the gamma levels, and it is still upscaled, yet there is no 'sharpen effect',or crushed blacks.

I think the opposite. Xbox One looks better, but like you said, not by much. I just think the PS4 shots seems a little washed out when compared to the X1.

Also to those saying AC4 doesn't look much better on next-gen...  what do you expect? It's the same game. It's not like they would've developed them editions as separate entities. Clearly they've developed all the editions as the same game, with just some higher-res textures on the new gen versions. The differences show with games exclusive to the next-gen platforms. Like Forza 4 vs Forza 5 for example. The X1 version looks much nicer.

believe it or not, the cpu used in the xbo and ps4 is pretty even in terms of power to last gen. last gen, the gpu was the bottleneck though. when Microsoft talks about balance, that's exactly what they mean, they matched the cpu and gpu so none of them would be the bottleneck.

The cpu will likely be a bottleneck in both consoles this time around. There's plenty of data from benchmarks of currently released games that shows many games do not like very low clock speeds.

if we're talking straight up the cpu alone, there'd be no question it is the bottleneck, but thats why theres support hardware to even things out. both companies took different paths in doing this. sony just added a bunch of extra CUs, for GPGPU, and microsoft added a bunch of cpu offloading hardware(programmable dsps, compression, codecs, fast and big cpu caches, upclock). now, with current launch games, are all these things being used at their fullest potential? I doubt it. we don't even know if the dev tools allow their use at all. as software becomes more optimized and leaner, more power will be unleashed too.

Remember these are the first games out. There is a lot of potential power in both consoles - which I can't wait to see!

Having not chosen my next platform yet, i'll say that i'm preferring the look of the XB1 there.

Having played both console too, i'll also say i prefer the look of the games on the XB1, this was tested with BF4 and COD (<< Which frankly looks like a slightly tweaked last gen game on both consoles!).
