MSFT Codename "Threshold"

Recommended Posts

Not gonna lie. This sounds very exciting! I wonder if this will be Windows 8.2?

If all goes according to early plans, Threshold will include updates to all three OS platforms (Xbox One, Windows and Windows Phone) that will advance them in a way to share even more common elements.

But Threshold will add another level of commonality across Microsoft's various Windows-based platforms, sources said. With the Threshold wave, Microsoft plans to support the same core set of "high value activities" across platforms. These high-value activities include expression/documents (Office, and the coming "Remix" digital storytelling app, I'd think); decision making/task completion (Bing, I'd assume); IT management (Intune and Workplace Join, perhaps?) and "serious fun."

Before Microsoft gets to Threshold, the company is on track to deliver an update to Windows 8.1 (known as Windows 8.1 Update 1) around the same time that it delivers Windows Phone "Blue" (Windows Phone 8.1). That's supposedly happening in the spring 2014/Q2 2014 timeframe, from what my sources have said.

Hopefully this bring a lot of the WP functions to windows and proper play to sharing to WP(still can't believe MS doesn't have Play To fully integrated in WP)

So, will people who use the desktop see any benefits from "threshold"?

Desktop users will see benefits even if Threshold is all about Metro.  Unifying operating systems will free up resources within Microsoft and provide better integration between services allowing them to do more faster.

I bet this will be the Windows 9 wave. WP8 will be more than 2 years in the market by then. That's eons in mobile market, they need a new version number from purely marketing standpoint.

So Windows 8 will be turning into the piece of wood on the bottom of a door that you walk over? Sounds good to me  :p

Sorry, I didn't realise you were trolling when I responded to your previous question.

Why do you think there won't be any benefits for desktop users? As it stands, both Windows 8 and 8.1 brought plenty of improvements to desktop users.

Plenty of behind the scenes benefits, precious few visual benefits, quite a lot of bloody annoying downsides!  (And I use W8.1 as my primary OS, so I know of what I speak).

I asked a legitimate question if windows 8 desktop users will benefit from like speed improvements, new functionalities etc in the announced threshold update.

Well the second half of your post has nothing to do with my reply to AWChicken but let's just say we agree to disagree on it. :) Plenty of threads have been spent on that topic.

Considering they did with 8.1 it's not hard to believe.  There's not enough info on 'Threshold' for anyone to give specifics.

Probably to the same extent that 8.1 delivered speed improvements and new functionality for Desktop users.
