Darrian
Wow, 117 votes and only ONE vote for touchscreen. I honestly did not expect that at all, even from Neowin. LOL when I read the thread title I thought "Is this guy serious?" Keyboards and mice are not going away just quite yet.
moeburn
I'm just curious: why would you make a receiver for the 360 controller when you can just buy one? Also, how would you go about doing that? Because I was dirt poor at the time, and I had a broken xbox to salvage from and its super easy. I made a youtube video on how to do it: You basically just unplug the controller RF card out of the 360 motherboard, and solder a USB cable to it. That's it. Does require one spare broken Xbox 360 though.* *Technically, this does not destroy your xbox. You can easily just plug the card back into the 360, with the USB cable you soldered still attached and hanging there. I did. It still worked just fine. Darrian
Huh. That's interesting. Didn't realize it was a card you could remove. Obviously I'm not willing to buy a 360 so I can rig up a $20 adapter, but yeah, that's pretty cool.
DConnell Member Posted December 6, 2013 Member Share Posted December 6, 2013 I use a mouse and keyboard on my desktop and laptop, both running Windows 8,1. I use the touchscreen on my tablet. I just picked up a Surface RT, and I assume my use of that will end up being a blend of the two. It mostly depends on whether I prefer the computer or tablet interface for whatever I'm doing. For instance, I prefer the less cluttered Android Facebook app over the web site, but prefer my laptop for emails. Video work requires my desktop computer, while for casual gaming while watching TV, my tablet is the best choice - I don't have to take up half the coffee table with my laptop. But it's definitely a mix. Neither mouse/keyboard nor touchscreen is perfect for every situation. So my new Surface RT might end up being my ideal device, since it supports both. :woot:
DConnell Member Posted December 6, 2013 Member Share Posted December 6, 2013 I didn't vote, since touchpad wasn't mentioned. I haven't used a mouse in many many years. If I'm not actally on a laptop, it's sitting by my TV and I use a wireless keyboard and wireless touchpad. Good point! Where's the option for trackball? That's been my pointer of choice on my desktop for over a decade - I've used the same one on 3 computers now!
raid0
The mouse and keyboard will never be gone.
xWhiplash
Yes, I will never use touch screen for productivity. Typing thousands of lines of code will not work well on a touch screen. Playing FPS and other AAA games will not work well on a touch screen.
The Evil Overlord
Yes, touchscreens are to fidly for me, sometimes I hit a letter and ger the one next to it etc... So keyboard and mouse for me. Ironically, I posted this using a touchscreen lol
Gerowen
Pretty much use a keyboard and mouse exclusively. Once and a great while I'll use my wife's Kindle Fire, but other than that I'm on either our desktop PC or the laptop.

LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted December 6, 2013 Veteran Share Posted December 6, 2013 I absolutely hate the trackpad on my personal laptop, the right click on it only works if you hit it in the absolute right place, otherwise it will click but not do anything. That's been my pointer of choice on my desktop for over a decade - I've used the same one on 3 computers now! In what world is a trackball not a mouse? When I said the word "mouse", I meant anything that controls a cursor on screen. Whether it is a wired mouse, wireless mouse, trackball, track pad, nerd stick, telekinesis, if it controls a cursor, it is a mouse.

Gerowen
I think a lot of people agree that the tactile feedback provided by a traditional keyboard and mouse has not yet been matched by their touchscreen alternatives. Touchscreens are nice for mobile use such as on a phone or tablet when you're out and about and want to perform some quick work; but when you want to sit down and write a paper or play a game or get some serious work done, nothing beats mechanical buttons. It gets annoying playing android games when you die because you didn't quite touch the power-up or item perfectly, and therefore it didn't register. Sir Topham Hatt
I have a Surface but it wasn't the best buy I ever made as I simply don't use it enough. My phone is touchscreen but the main PC isn't.
Dick Montage
Since we are seeing big name companies like Windows fading away from the traditional mouse&keyboard environment, and shifting towards a more touchscreen-oriented user interface, I find myself wondering; are touchscreens really as dominant as people think they are? Windows isn't a company, and I see no strives within Microsofts OS offerings to fade away from the keyboard at all.
LimeMaster
Yes, I use a laptop trackpad and keyboard. I prefer it over touch screens and virtual keyboards for many reasons such as it's faster to type it with, it's way easier to play games using physical buttons/keys and lastly, shortcuts keys generally work better on a real keyboard. :) I could post more reasons, but I think I'll stop myself before getting carried away.
