Microsoft is ditching the "shortages" tradition. And it's a smart move. Instead of sitting there being happy about being sold out, they pumping out units and getting them onto store shelves to be sold.

Having stock on shelves for consumers to buy, is a good thing. Especially this time of year.

Sold out again.  But I managed to tell a coworker of mine that picked one up.  He asked me earlier today if I still had my extra one.

according to people on reddit, people are receiving units with a manufactured date of December. they are indeed pumping these out like crazy.

It does seem like MS is winning the supply race, people are saying there's a large wait for a PS4 depending on market. The XB1 seems to go out of stock for a short time and then a new batch hits the channel.

To be fair Sony are producing a million consoles per month.

The demand just seems to be higher for the PS4s, but its still early days and could turn around for the Xbox One.

That production number is a guess at this point, do we know when the started production? I doubt it was as late as October, they set a target for the end of the year of 3million, that sounds like that's what they expected to be able to ship out to me. MS never gave a set number they expected to sell before the year ends so we'll see where it all ends up.

Microsoft could be producing that many or more. Not sure how you're drawing any conclusions from that number.

If both consoles end up within 500k units of each other at the end of each of their fiscal year/quarter then I think this is going to be another great console generation.  Microsoft just has to show to people (non-hardcore) that it's worth the extra $100 over a PS4 and that the Kinect isn't just a gimmick.  They look like they will have the software lineup coming out starting with Titanfall.  Sony looks like they will have some good software coming out next year too just a little later.

I've always said long-term Microsoft needs to compensate for the failure of the Xbox in Japan/Asian region.  If they do nothing special but just pump them out and hope people in the America and Europe and certain other regions buys the Xbox One then I think long term you'll see Sony start to get a larger market share than Microsoft but not huge since Japan really does seem to be a portable handheld country now and for the most part is a dwindling market.

Um, how does that link prove that demand is higher for the ps4?

I know people love to bash MS for not boasting sales numbers often enough, but are we really going to jump to a conclusion simply based on the fact that Sony announced a number?

Remember, Sony made this announcement because it included new 24hr sales data from the new regions they were launching it.  MS was already in all the regions its going to be for this year, so they didn't have any new 24hr sales to make news about.

Guys, guys, guys!  Didn't you read the article?

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has told investors that he expects Sony to ship 1 million PS4s per month.

An analyst said it!  Those guys are never wrong!

Sony launched in 30 countries, Microsoft launched in "only" 13. It's Sony's loss that they can't make enough.

I guess? A long wait sure, but doubt it'll hurt sales. If anything they'll be stronger with larger install base for each console.

lack of titles can have people putting off purchases until a later date, which is risky . a lot can happen in that time, and it could be an opportunity for the competition to steal away a large amount of customers, or it can make their system be perceived as more popular if have more sales because of their titles.

I left that post mid-line but let me elaborate now.

Sony has paid big bucks for exclusive Destiny content and whether you like it or not, it is one of the most anticipated hot new AAA game in the launch year. I would guess Sony might be frustrated internally because as it stands now, Sony has nothing to counter Titanfall.

I just said 6 posts ago they have inFamous :P Unless you think only like-for-like genres matter?

Well Sony did pay for exclusive content, so I could agree that they probably expected it to launch around the time Titanfall did to counter it even more.

I certainly think inFamous is a counter since its a AAA release, but maybe Sony felt they needed more. I don't know the sales history of the inFamous series, but going up against a AAA-anticipated fps may have made Sony think it would be worth paying Bungie to get an edge with Destiny, another AAA-anticipated fps/mmo/whatever

Or perhaps Sony didn't care when the game came out at all and just wanted an edge when it did come out.  They are getting the beta first as well.

I wrote a line about infamous and then removed it :p I don't think Infamous will stand up to either Titanfall or Destiny. I don't follow PS3/4 games so just guessing here but Destiny/Titanfall are in a different league. :p

PS4 is sold out for 3 stock drops.

I've heard rumours that the stock drop expected on the 20th of December is going to fall short of pre-ordered 2nd drop numbers (there aren't going to be enough) and that third drop which was due early January is looking like being pushed back to March.

A complete disaster for the PS team here. Microsoft have tons of stock in channel and are just continuing to pump it in.

It does seem like MS is winning the supply race, people are saying there's a large wait for a PS4 depending on market. The XB1 seems to go out of stock for a short time and then a new batch hits the channel.

Sony decided to do a much broader launch than MS, which is why MS appears to be winning the supply race in the US and other major markets they know they have a chance to capture large share. While this means that supply is spread thinner, Sony is playing the larger game of appeasing more markets. People who really want a PS4 will wait around for one. After all, this generation of consoles is expected to last at least until 2020.

I'm sure you mean a different league sales wise.

In the grand scheme of things, you could be right.  Lets face it, shooters sell very well compared to almost any other genre.  If Destiny and Titanfall live up to the AAA hype, then they are likely to be huge sellers.  There are just most fans of shooters then for any other genre.

inFamous is going to be a good game and I think it will sell well, but maybe not fps/tps levels of sales. Again, I don't know what the previous games did sales wise.  It'll get a boost as well as it will be the lone AAA new release for the ps4 when it launches  and many people are eager to get it with the slim selection of games, including myself.

That's true, but then no one suggested this when Sony announced 1 million in 24 hrs for 2 regions and MS announced 1 million in 24 hrs for 13 regions.

MS had the broader launch for a couple weeks and the same could apply to them.

But fast forward to today and it has flipped with Sony releasing in 32 regions and the X1 in 13.  Sony announces 2.1 million in 32 regions and suddenly it puts MS' 1 million in 13 regions into perspective.

TitanFall does look good and I'm sure will sell plenty of copies, but it's not an Xbox One exclusive. It will be on PC and 360 also.
..and probably PS4 if it does well after its released. EA are publishing it, so expect them to milk it as much as they possibly can.. I'm thinking a Wii, 3DS, Vita, Android, IOS and anything else out there versions if it sells well.

For Destiny, Sony may have exclusive content for the game but exclusive content means nothing. An extra map, or gun, maybe camos? Realistically these don't really add much extra value to a game. I definitely wouldn't buy a console because one has more exclusive content for the same games.

inFamous on the other hand is a great IP and is a Sony exclusive which pushes PS sales. Xbox has Halo.

The point about Titanfall makes sense, but that ignores the fact that if a sequel is made, that is in the future.  So your talking about a AAA shooter that is only available on one next gen console, the X1.  It will most definitely have an impact on X1 sales if its a good game.

The fact that it is on pc and 360 will affect that in some way, but I really don't think it will negate all of its affects. For those that are not big pc gamers and also bought into next generation consoles or are going to buy in, that game could drive them to the X1.
