Need suggestion on which software to use for encrypting document

Question

Hi all,

I have a document store (Text + pdf + word documents + pics) and want to encrypt them and share with some persons by uploading this to box/dropbox etc

I can simply zip them and put a password. But that would be my last resort

Are there any tools (free) which I can use to encrypt and decrypt files ?

What would you recommend?

7zip with encyption enabled and password. You could also use something like Boxcryptor Classic (not the non-classic version). It is a virtual encrypted drive where each file is encrypted separately. You'd share the passphrase with whoever and you'd both install it.

http://www.gnupg.org/index.html

Free open source version of PGP, you can encrypt to their or multiple users public keys, or you can just use a password.

But to be honest there is really nothing wrong with just zipping and encrypting for a 1 off sort of need. If you going to be passing files back and forth all the time, then gnupg makes more sense if you ask me.

To make it simple to use on windows you might want to use http://www.gpg4win.org/
