+Eternal Tempest MVC Posted December 6, 2013 MVC Share Posted December 6, 2013 This is a interesting TED talk that obesity could be nothing more than a side effect (like the skin turns black and blue when you get a muscle bruise) of blood sugar issues. It's not a conclusion but seems to demonstrate evidence he wants to research and we may be going about diabetes <-> obesity the wrong way. In essence diabetes causing obesity, not obesity causing diabetes. http://www.ted.com/talks/peter_attia_what_if_we_re_wrong_about_diabetes.html madd-hatter 1 Share

xendrome
I like how the person that wrote the letter's mental condition shows up in the fact that the believe that obesity is just some simple choice or a habit as they said in their letter. It's clear that this person's view of reality is skewed, and they themselves have never had to deal directly with or have had a problem of their own like obesity, drugs, addiction or a substance, etc. While some people choose to eat themselves into being obese and it can be a choice for them it is usually a choice of depression or the fact that they have given up (more common). Other people can't help their physical/chemical make up and the way their body processes the nutrients in foods (less common), either way, it is a problem for a lot of people. techbeck
Sounds like a ratings grab. I wouldnt call the guy who called a bully. Just some dick. Just been turned in to bullying because that is one of several things that are hot in the media at the moment. I am in no way condoning what the guy did and do not think anything badly of overweight people. I just think this is another example of the media making something more than what it is. riahc3
Hello, so, instead of ignoring him like they should have, the station decided to give him his 15 minutes.I completely agree. This was a "attack" towards her, not the station. She should have addressed it herself in a personal and professional matter not involving the station at all. As a matter of fact, it was problably the stations idea to air this public. I agree with what she replied, it just should have been on her own personal ground. Yorak
I think the writer had a good point. Obesity is a problem all over the world. It is caused by the individual and their choices. Genetics and other metabolic issues make for a very small percentage of obese people (less than 1%). We should not be afraid of hearing the truth. We should accept it for its value and choose what to do with it next. exotoxic, Bryan R., AWilliams87 and 3 others 6 Share
riahc3
Hello, Genetics and other metabolic issues make for a very small percentage of obese people (less than 1%).1: Proof of this "less than 1%"? 2: Proof that she is not part of the "less than 1%"? Im more interested in the answer to my second question. Unless you are her personal doctor ;)

Im more interested in the answer to my second question. Unless you are her personal doctor ;) Do a simple Google search, and it comes up as the first, second and third link. "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition where investigators have attempted to identify the proportion of human obesity accounted for by genetic variation. Their conclusion: probably no more than 1% (we used to think it was 5%)" Yorak 1 Share

Skiver Veteran Posted December 9, 2013 Veteran Share Posted December 9, 2013 hmmmm, if somebody said that to me i would not have reacted as such. the email, seemed to show concern than intent to hurt. i would have probably gone "thanks for your concern, i agree i should do more, and i will........after this kitkat" or words to that affect Concern? The email basically said as a fat person, you shouldn't be a public role model! I'm sorry but that is not acceptable. so, instead of ignoring him like they should have, the station decided to give him his 15 minutes. I think it is far worse to just ignore something like this, instead as part of the anti-bullying campaign they are using it as an example that no matter what it is not OK to say things like this and that doing so will only lead to your children potentially learning the same attitude.
