Computer Asset/Inventory Management Software?

Hello all,

 

I'm looking for a piece of software that has been the HARDEST thing to find for the last several years.  I have a small computer business and I'm looking for a piece of software that will handle the inventory management of assembled computers and parts of computers.  I'm looking for a simple piece of software that doesn't get into enterprise grade asset management, relationship tracking, or even GIS tracking.

 

Basically my small business takes in scrap computers either from pulls from a trash bin, computers that customers give me after they upgrade to something better, etc.  I normally take these computers and either 1.) repair them using current parts to fix them and resell them online or 2.) I simply pull all of the useable parts and metal recycle the junk/broken parts.

 

I would like to be able to enter in information about the systems and parts into inventory software that, will in an easily readable format, allow me to get an overview of the total number/info of parts and or computer systems I have.  I've searched and searched but never found anything that satisfies what I'm looking for.  Heck, I'd even use Wordpress on an in-house server with an Inventory Management plugin/theme, but I haven't been even able to find that! :(

 

Here are a few aspects that are important to me:

 

1.)  Create new data fields for different parts.

2.)  Web-based so I can run it inside a browser window from an in-house server.

3.)  Possible mobile app available to log inventory from my phone in the back room.

4.)  No excess features outside of logging fields of information regarding each part, PC, etc.

5.)  Inventory software discs as well as computer hardware.

 

Just an FYI, Spiceworks is NOT what I'm looking for.  Spiceworks can inventory currently running systems, but that's not what I'm after.  I want to go to our backroom, pull the bin of parts that are sitting on the shelf, add the parts, properties about the parts into inventory.

 

Thoughts?  Suggestions?

FYI - I'd prefer free if at all possible for my small business.  I'm not against paying for software if it's a reasonable price.  Not an enterprise price.

Well, there goes my idea! Im sure someone (even here on Neowin, hell, myself) can make this software for you but not for free for two reasons:

1: We have to eat.

2: Maintenance of software is very expensive.

That being said, Im sure there is SOME freeware alternative....

Have you considered PartKeepr? Seems like it may do what you want? Is open source and apparently easy to install.

Actually let me rephrase that, while I do love free I don't mind paying for good software if it's reasonable. :)  What I meant about not wanting to pay expensive fees, I'm talking in the range of thousands of dollars.  I've been seeing some asset management / Inventory management software for enterprises that is in the range of $1500+ USD for a single user license with all features enabled with those features not even being features I'd use or need.

 

However, I definitely am not against paying a developer for software that he/she codes based around my business needs.  Esp if it works great and does just what I need it to do. :)  If you have some thoughts on that feel free to message me!

Might just be easier to create your own Excel spreadsheet and do it all manually, if you think it might get a bit complex you could create an Access database and manage it that way and take advantage of SQL queries if you know that

I currently use an Excel spreadsheet and it's getting too cumbersome, and fast.  The amount of parts, broken systems, etc that I get in have left a spreadsheet pages and pages long of info that I need, but is just beyond cumbersome.  I was hoping I could find a php/sql based web app that would let me customize all of the fields I need during setup/install (or afterwards).  Where I have one screen to enter data.  Where new categories, subcategories, fields, etc can be created/added.  Then another screen where it's very cleanly laid out to choose my categories to view, the subcategories, and then lists of parts within.  All in a nice clean web interface.

 

Eventually if I hire someone I'd like for them to handle alot of the mundane part inventorying so something with a clean interface with full control over data fields is what I'm needing.

 

 

.fahim - I'm looking at and playing with the PartKeepr demo site and while it seems to be almost what I need, it's lack of customization in removing the unwanted fields and adding my own needed fields is extremely limiting and probably would keep me from using it.

It's PHP and open source.. you could always customise it yourself  :D

Crm solutions have inventory.management built into them there are some free and some low cost. This will help with billing, ticket management, and customer tracking.

Paying ONE single developer will cost you WAAAY more than any software you can find out there.

I think what .fahim suggested looks nice :) I might even mention it at my workplace.
