Motherboard for stable, fastest (and easiest) X79/2011 overclocking?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Sorry for being a pain in the ass this week. The last week you work before going on vacation and everyone is on your ass :p

Anyways we have:

PNY VCQK2000-PB

Samsung 840 Pro Basic Kit 256GB

Cosair Hydro H110

Intel Core i7 4820K 2011

ASUS DRW-24F1ST

Seasonic Platinum-760

NZXT H630

Arctic Silver 5

The MSI Big Bang XPower II has a problem where it does not post when one RAM module is inserted into DIMM 3 so I cant quad channel. I was considering replacing it (the board) but it seems my boss isnt too happy with it so we are going with another. Before this, we were looking at a Asus so I relooked now again at Asus and I read good things about the ASUS Rampage IV Extreme, a board geared towards CPU overclocking.

Also, I called MSI yesterday and they told me to write them a email about the issue. I wrote them and they havent replied in more than 24 hours. Kinda ###### about that myself.

So any recommendations for X79 boards that overclock stable, fast (and in my case easy)?

Thank you

Hello,

my recommendations would be that Asus you mentioned, or an EVGA.

Read a few DOA from Newegg (not buying from Newegg)....Hope it doesnt bite me in the ass later...

Hello,

Go for EVGA, expensive but heavy.

They only have one board http://eu.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=150-SE-E789-KR&family=Motherboard%20Family&series=&sw=5&uc=EUR :( and when searching for overclocking and X79, I didnt see it until today.

It seems to have A LOT of BIOS/UEFI issues....

Rampage IV Extreme is old but it does require a bios update in order to pair it with an E-Ivy processor (which is the current processor that the op using). Unless you want to get the rampage IV black edition which is released recently and has E-Ivy support out of the box but it'll cost you $500 though. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132053

Besides updating the BIOS (which is extreme easy to do on that board), is there any difference besides being black and the price tag between the Extreme and the Black Edition?

Also, I should go with the Rampage IV Extreme then? Ill order it Jan 7th so I still have time to browse thru...

For the bios update of the extreme, just make sure you have an E-Sandy processor in hand because if you put an E-Ivy on the extreme mobo without the latest bios update, computer won't run at all. As for the difference, I'm not so sure about the difference other than the paint job.

Edit: after reading some of the consumer reviews between the two, the black edition seems to fix some of the problems that the extreme has.

That made zero sense. I should just have a USB flash drive on hand...

I havent read any problems the extreme has :s

Hello,

I should have looked before but I found a spec area on Asus:

Here is what Black has vs Extreme:

* - Supports newer processors out of the box.

* - Can reach memory speeds of up to 2800 where Extreme only up to 2400

* - Black loses one PCIe x16 slot but gains one PCIe x1 slot (weird change)

* - Black has two more SATA 6GB ports

* - Black's Bluetooth spec is updated to 4.0 from 2.1

* - Way better DAC on Black

* - Black has two less USB 2.0 ports

* - Black has a OC Panel vs the OC Key on Extreme

* - Black: 6 x USB 3.0, 4 x USB 2.0 Extreme: 4 x USB 3.0, 8 x USB 2.0

Thats about it basically.

you're welcome, it's just that some mobos you can stick a usb and update the bios easily while others require and older cpus to apply the update; that's all.
