Chromecast Compatible App List

Recommended Posts

With most of the major streaming video services now accounted for, Google needs to look elsewhere to expand its family of Chromecast-compatible apps. Today the company took a big step in that effort, announcing Chromecast support for 10 third-party apps including Vevo and Songza. Google is also paying some attention to advanced users; Plex, an app that's hugely popular among home-theater enthusiasts, has also gained Chromecast support.

"I?m happy to tell you that over the last few months, we?ve been working closely with Google to bring Plex to the Chromecast," said founder Elan Feingold. "It?s an honor for us to be among the first handful of apps on the device, and it?s been great working with Google ? we?ve never met a smarter or more energetic group of people to work with." Plex supports video on day one, and the app will be able to cast photos and music "very shortly." "Note that for an initial period, the Chromecast feature is only available to our beloved PlexPass users, who get exclusive access to many new features," Feingold says.

The full list of apps that have added Chromecast support today includes:

  • Songza
  • Vevo
  • Plex
  • Red Bull.TV
  • Revision 3
  • PostTV
  • Viki
  • BeyondPod
  • RealPlayer Cloud
  • Avia

Not sure how complete the list is considering Pandora isnt on it. But good to see more companies adding Chromecast.

Yeah I don't see HBO Go or Youtube, etc, so these must be just new apps..

My question though.. I assume these are still done using the App on the phone and you tell it to stream to the chromecast? The Chromecast still does not have an actual app icon on the device that you can choose to run like the AppleTV or simular devices correct?

You have to either use Chrome Browser, or the app has to support it.

It makes sense. The list is what's new/added today. Pandora was already supported (though recent)

I haven't looked too much into Chromecast, so I have a slightly noobish question to ask about it: can you play any video content at all on your PC using Chrome and then stream it over to the TV with Chromecast, with sound going to the TV? Like for example a live stream; we've got BT Sport, and we can watch their channels online on their website, so would we be able to play it on the TV through Chromecast no problem and no need for BT to support it or through an app? If so, then I'll take the plunge and buy an imported one on eBay.

Personal media like AVI/MKV not right now.  Although, some videos will play fine via Chrome when casted. (drag/drop video in Chrome Browser)  I imagine that this will be available once Google allows this feature.

Basically whatever is casted via Chrome Browser will display on the TV including sound/audio.  I streamed a football game last night from a website via Chrome and casted it.  Played great, no issues.

I would check out this thread as it contains more info  :)

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for. :) I'm not fussed about streaming media on PCs or mobiles; I can handle that with the spare 360 and PS3 Media Server. :P

I actually use my Chromecast a lot less now that I got an XB1.  I like the voice commands with Netflix.  Once Google allows personal media streaming, I will be using CC more.  I used CC all the time before XB1 though and it worked great.

I dont have cable at home so I found a site last night to stream the ESPN football game.  Basically an embedded video in the browser to watch the game.  I used CC to cast it to my TV and it worked flawlessly.

Plex support? Sweet! It looks like there might be some issues with it right now, but that's nice once they get it all fixed. I was just talking to a friend about using Plex Web and streaming the tab to watch Plex on Chromecast (which he says works great). Native is even better!

Now I'm curious... Does this stream from the device, or from the media server? Say I pull out my Android phone and play something, I wonder if it goes from my server, to my phone, to my chromecast, or if Chromecast goes straight to the server for the media.

Of course you can play your media files to your TV with Chromecast.

Select a movie, then select Chromecast ... BAM you have a movie playing on TV.

You cant send any files you have to the Chromecast. Especially from a Windows PC. What app are you using to send it from the iPad or iPhone?

I said media files....  not any files...  media means videos, photos...

You do the research and learn:

That reply had nothing to do with my comment.

Yes it is...  you can play from your media server...  you have plex server... so you have plex client on your phone/tablet... you can play media on your TV as long as you have a button that allow you to send media to the TV.

No matter what brand you have... such as plex, airplay, etc...  as long as you have the supported devices in order to work.

I have media server on my network... so I could play media on my 50" TV/tablet/phone... anytime.

Like I said earlier...  you do the research and learn...  it is simple.

Haha, that's still not what I said. I was wondering if kicking a video off to play from my phone sends the video FROM my phone, or from my server. It makes a big difference. When you cast a tab, it sends directly from that device. When you play Netflix, Hulu, etc, it connects directly to their server and doesn't actually stream through your device. I haven't gotten home to play with it yet though, nor does it seem like it actually works yet without crashing, but it would be interesting to know.

I would assume they would have gone with direct from server streaming rather than from device, though from device might help with some compatibility. Your Plex server doesn't necessarily have to be on the local network, I don't know if that would complicate streaming to the Chromecast, but I can't see why since it would have to be accessible either way.

So, to update, I finally got a chance to play with Plex with Chromecast last night. It is a little buggy still and crashed once or twice, but it did work, and pretty well. It does stream directly from the server because I got a force close one time on the app and it just kept playing like nothing happened, so that's nice as well. Let them clear up any bugs and I'll be looking to change up my parent's media setup at their house soon to this. I think it would be easy enough for them to use from any phone they have.
