Changelog for v. Annoyed Koala 12/9/2013

  • HUGE balance patch, every item, creature, armor and weapon rebalanced. Leveling system entirely rewritten

Although the balance is early the new leveling system, the system is much better than the old one and we can now improve balance over time.

  • Added early implementation of creature taming (more features coming soon)

  • Added new mining items

  • Added new weapons

  • Added new throwable items

  • Added grappling hook

  • Added new boss and new sector of the galaxy

  • Added a stance system to weaponry, not currently used but will allow us to add secondary attacks to weaponry very soon.

  • Tons of new sounds

  • Guns more common in tier 3

  • Underground detached/rare biomes more common

  • Underground random encounters more common

  • Underground chests more common

  • Ore rebalance (probably way way too much ore at the moment, will be fixed later, enjoy it)

  • Baby monsters

  • New monster palettes

  • Added pixel compressor for high cost banking (idea from Ncrpts)

  • Disable using the beamaxe to light caves underground

  • Added new hats

  • some monsters now graze on grass (can look ugly, needs finishing)

  • Small bipeds now socialise with eachother

  • All the monsters behave smarter and are less likely to get stuck

  • You can no longer attack through blocks

  • Fix the game on XP (hopefully)

  • Tons more fixes and smaller additions

Changelog for v. Frustrated Koala 10/12/2013

Hi guys, so last night we pushed the major balance update. We'd tested it for hours and at the last minute a bug crept in that broke crafted weapon damage, making them crazy overpowered.

Hence the name of this version.

That's been fixed. It was an interesting bug. The old leveling system used a "level" specified in each swords configuration file. The new system no longer uses "level", instead each sword is hand balanced. The bug that crept in at the last moment reenabled "level". Given that they are now unused, levels weren't changed from their previous values that went all the way up to level 100, and now that the game is leveled up to 10, they were massively too powerful.

Also..

  • Uranium, plutonium and solarium now work as fuels
  • You can now REALLY craft a grappling hook
  • Boss balance has been tightened even more
  • Platinum armor is now unlocked on tier 5
  • You can now 'recapture' pets
  • some more fixes

More coming really soon!

Is there anybody from Neowin playing the Starbound Beta?

Starbound on Steam

Basically, this has been called the spiritual successor to Terraria. So far, it seems quite good. If anybody would like to play, I have a server so PM me and I will give you the information.

its pretty much a full terraria. Space ship is your central HQ which you beam from/to, which is pretty cool, and beaming to different elemental planets has its pros/cons. Lol, and going deeper down is so much fun too. More minerals, there are also flesh block to harvest . Enemies are jumpy and alert.

A well recommended purchase guys, 8.5/10

Not purchased it yet but it looks like a lot of fun, I watched a Quick Look of it over at Giant Bomb a few days ago. It'll be good when more of the plot based activities get fleshed out!

Just be aware that since is a beta it can crash sometimes (never happened to me so far).

Also they keep adding content with each patch (2 patches so far).

I have been posting a lot on their official forums about bugs i have found and issues i have been having.

Last night there was rather a bit of it actually, after the first of the two updates yesterday If i tried to use a Silver Pickaxe, the game client would crash and give me 4 or 5 dialog boxes with different errors on it. And then after the second update yesterday my game client became corrupt and i had to do a Verify and re-download from steam. As soon as it was done, it wanted to install that newer patch again. Which instantly corrupted the client again and it had to be re-downloaded. I have not checked the status of it yet this morning however, As above its a beta so i am not torn up about it.

I've been lucky for not finding any bug like that :S

I really want to get into the game, but I'm holding off until it's out of phase 1. Having all progress regularly wiped to start over can be  frustrating for me since I don't have a lot of time to play games. It looks awesome though. I'll definitely pick it up when it's closer to "release".

I ran into a few other issues as well but as it stands i cannot even access the game anymore. I just remote connected home to see if it was still broken, so i think when i get home i am going to have to just remove the game and re-install it. Its not like i will lose any data as they did a character wipe yesterday anyway.

I've been playing it.

Not bad so far, some things feel great and you can see the game has great potential and the rate they're adding content too is exciting.

Player wipes are annoying but they have mentioned it countless time. Still funny to read the forums and people moaning they've lost their character.

The game feels like Terraria 2. I know Terraria 2 is in development but Starbound has the feature set you'd think Terraria 2 will include.

Their forums are indeed hilarious in this regard. The first time it happened to me (yesterday, as I have only been playing for three days) it took me be surprise. At that point though, it only took an hour to get back to the point I was at before since I knew what was going on this time.

The combat is a bit irritating at times, as the monsters have odd hitboxes it seems. My server has various error messages complaining about a few snippets of code. I am sure these little things will be worked out over time. Overall though, I am having a lot of fun. It will be more fun when my buddy joins me this weekend. We have gone through all of Minecraft (including DivineRPG, Hexxit, etc.) and Terraria we played through like three times. We just played through it again after that last huge update. So we needed something new.

I'd love to play it, but as with Terraria (and Minecraft before that) you need to know IP addresses and that is just super inconvenient (not to mention I don't really have many friends who are playing it, and I haven't found any server listings yet for the game).

I don't get the allure of these games and minecraft.

personally I think Darkout look more interesting then this though, basically same gameplay but nice graphics. and seems to have a semblance of a story/goal anyway.

I've been thinking of getting this for a while after the failure that was terraria...

Seeing as it works out cheaper to get a 4-pack, anyone else interested in getting it and wants to save some money?

While this game looks pretty good so far, I have little desire to pay for a game that's not yet finished. It's good to hear some feedback about it though, thank you. :)

To some the graphic aesthetic is a big reason why they play the game. It has that whole retro pixel art look.

That being said I hadn't hard of that Darkout game before, it looks interesting.

So I've been playing a bit of SP before the impending character wipe, and decided to take on the Tier 1 boss.

Piece of cake with bombs, took about 5 hits to down
